Dragon fitting instructions

Featured Replies

I've just purchased a Dragon Performance box for my PD100 TDi. Got it at a very good price from their ebay shop - used 'best offer' and went £20 below asking price, they bit my hand off!

Anyway, the instructions that come with the box are absolutly shocking. They seem to be translated from another language and have definitly lost somthing (sence) in the process. I'm fine with the actual plugging in/wiring but am slightly confused by the 'calibration' bit. I'll quote from the supplied instruction sheet - this bit comes after the loom fitment.

"Bring the vehicle on operating temperature.

(5 min warm run phases are required to carry out a correct calibration.)

Switch off the ignition.

put the PD module on the PD conector plug. Let the engine after assembly of the system at least 45 sec. run in the idle mixture supply.

Operate in this time not the accelerator!

The new module calibrates itself automatically. After the calibration phase both LEDs briefly blink. Then only the system is ready and flawless functioned. The system is preset. Normally you will not need to adjust the module."

I think this basically means to connect the box when the engine is warm, start and let the engine idle for 45 seconds - job done! Is this how everyone else has fitted theirs? Stange how it describes fitting the loom first, then bringing up to temp, then connecting the box - I'm pretty sure it won't run without the box connected to the loom! Am I wrong?

Incidently, knowing it was for a PD100, the box came preset with the jumper on pin 2 (7 pin unit). I thought this seemed a little conservative so have set it on pin 5 to start with. Does anyone have any experience of a PD100 fitted with a Dragon box?

Hope to get it fitted on Sunday weather permitting.

Wasn't aware of any calibration on the boxes I used - just plug in and go :D

If anyone has the original instructions for a 7 pin silver box I'd really appreciate a copy. Mine didn't have any with it.

I've got mine somewhere, but there was nothing about getting the engine up to temp that I recall (in fact considering how close you have to get to the block to swap the connectors, I'd have had the burns to remind me! :o )

All you need to do is:

1. Remove the cable from the top of the Dragon box, and remove the fuse from the live wire;

2. Disconnect the injector plug from the right-hand side of the block (take car with the little red clip), attach the Dragon box's plug into the block, and connect the car's plug into the socket on the other leg of the Y;

3. Find a way to route the cable that keeps it away from anything it might dangle against (round the back of the air box is good);

4. Connect the live wire to the +ve connector on the battery and the earth to the -ve;

5. Connect the cable to the Dragon box, and find a suitable place for the box (most people just sit it between the battery and the air box, and the bonnet holds it in place);

6. Tidy up and loose wires and insert the fuse;

7. Start up the car and leave it idling for a moment or two to calibrate (if it even needs to :ne_nau: can't hurt, though!)

If you want to change the setting (what do you mean it's not already on 7?! :P ), remember to switch off the ignition and remove the fuse from the live wire before you open the box. There are two LEDs inside that you may or may not be able to see with the box closed, depending if the bottom cover has a window. IIRC, it should be constant green if it's getting power, flashing green if it's running, and red if there's a problem. :thumbup:

The instructions that they ship are for the newer style boxes (the ones with the USB dondles - which incidentally the VAG unit don't have :rolleyes: ). Whereas you have the slightly older 7 jumper pin unit, which do not need calibrating.

I'd fit it to a warm engine, as that way you can go and have some fun straight away without having to wait for the engine to warm up :thumbup:

Let the engine after assembly of the system at least 45 sec. run in the idle mixture supply.

Operate in this time not the accelerator!

Instructions by Yoda I think. :D
