Brakes: 4x4 -> vRS

Featured Replies

Does anyone know for definite how much of a job this would be? I know that the pad sizes are the same, so am led to believe that the calipers could be reused.

1) What parts would be needed? Carriers

carriers.. expensive..

Best suggestion is work on existing size but uprate pads \ fluid \ discs..

What are you running at the moment?

Done that 2500's plus grooved. Just fancied venting + larger at the rear. No jokes rob.

I take it you've looked into this, Ian? (BTW carriers are...... what, exactly?)

Yes, and Skoda priced carriers (basiclly the whole hub carrier) were

I have not found any issues with 2500's n terms of feel or fade - have you or do you just want to stop quicker?

Well, I've had glow-in-the-dark discs a few times (bright red  ) and although this might look pretty I don't suppose that this can be good for them, so I was hoping the larger discs would cool better especially with the vented rears.

I've had blue discs plenty of times (standard discs) after hard runs, but never felt any fade. Vented rears is certainly something I want to look at, as the standard ickle rears take a lot of hammering, esp with ESP.

Group buy then, Adrian :P

Ive got a 4x4 & I need better rears, so er um group buy, well why not !!

OK, that's three of us (I take it you'd be interested at the right price, Ian?) plus Bengie? I'll do some digging around.

stop... twisting... my... arm!!!

oh go on then, at the right price :D

Depending what you go for, if its a custom package talk to Ian Godney at Godspeed 01656 660899. He custom builds Brakes to suit & might do a deal on several cars

If I had 4x4 still...Personally found 4x4 brakes to be different and never enough for the way I drive. Just never felt like I was stopping...Rs feels spot on, but then I have 2500's & drilled/grooved all around this time, but even on oem pads & discs it felt better; wierd huh...

dare I say it... fluid?

what exactly are we looking at for a group buy then?? i fancy some bigger better calipers and discs, whether this reequires carriers or not i dont know and i also want some drilled/grooved/vented discs all round.

whole hog?? why not!

No! Not the fluid, although I paid for the change by dealers and despite pedal movement (possible air) it retained the same feel as yours. I just did not feel it was enough. As mentioned before i's the bodyroll on the 4x4 that gave me the sensation I think of not slowing down, it was better on KW's. Fluid and 2500's it did stop, just not in my mind and thats where it matters.

It's odd as calipers are the same, discsize is different, but pads are the same...just a mental thing and me I guess...

why are you looking to upgrade the rears? most of the braking is done at the fronts,if the rears are too powerful you could destabilise the car under heavy braking and even lock the rears.Pads, discs and fluids upgraded for the fronts should be fine unless you really want 4 pots for heavy track use, then a full AP set or similar is what you need

keep the fronts upgraded but leave the rears,is my very humble opinion

Im running 335x32 with AP 4 pots on the ront but the car feels like it needs more real end stability under very heavy braking and the rear wheels get a lot of brake dust on them which indicates they are working fairly hard. Also they look a bit like toy brakes compared to the fronts.

Stuart, Ian made up some 308 or 320mm rears for my RS, he may still have them.

Dave, you need to balance the braking. Look at current WRC cars, they run the same sized brakes front and rear.

good point, but the WRC cars are much lighter, lock the backs on track with a standard Octavia and i would have thought its goodbye back end

i am a numpty on the techy stuff, but i still think a decent set of 4 pots on the front is the way to go

and the WRCs have rock hard suspension to minimise dive,on a standard car,all you need do is upgrade the pads at the back,(and the WRC drivers dont really anchor on do they? :);))
