Anyone removed their aircon?

Featured Replies

Has anyone ever done it? Just interested because i dont really use it and it just seems like something extra to go wrong. And obvioulsy because of the weight reduction and engine parasite removal advantages.

Im guessing you would need some sort of dummy pulley wheel to take the place of the pump?

:zombie:

Wont do much for the re-sale value of the car!

im keeping this car for life! its too good to sell!

Possible, but IMHO pointless, The power drain isnt really that much the weight saving is negligable and as Phil pointed out a total killer at resale time.

You would either need a dummy compressor/wheel, but more practically a shorter belt.

you dont even use it in the height of summer?

So you never use the air-con to help de-mist the windows in the winter?

I think its more than just removing the mechanical parts anyway, you'll have to ditch the climatronic unit in favour of a standard blower assembly from a lesser model then use VAG-COM to tell the car what you've done.

Mine's been bust for ages, and it's coming out soon for similar reasons. I certainly don't miss it. Hope to be able to mock up a dummy wheel so I don't need to mess around with aircon pump brackets (from a non-AC fabia) Pump will be coming out (10kg+) and the radiator (guess at 5kg?) and as much of the associated pipework as possible. I also believe there's a coolant reservoir thing in the dash which I wouldn't mind removing too, but that might be more awkward to get to.

Won't that leave you with no heater and no air drier?

Jason, are you modelling your car on that Aston Martin which, was on Top Gear recently?

Yes, apart from mine won't have a thumping great V8 in it. :P

Not sure on the "heater" etc element. Obviously I want that, so shall mostl likely leave the dash side of things intact. Losing the pump and rad off the front will save a not to be sniffed at amount of weight, and from in front of the front wheels as well. :)

You could change the engine to a 1.8T to save even more weight !

Just thinking out loud, but will taking some weight off just one side of the car not potentially cause a bit of instability?

Chris

Being generous both way,s I reckon you're taking 20kg out of 1000kg (kerb weight without driver), or 2%, which is maybe like getting anoth 4bhp.

Yeah i recon if anything expensive goes wrong with it ill just whip it out! (as if it would be that easy!!)

Since im planning on keeping the car long term (looking for relatively low cost maintenance here) and eventually attending track days etc, removing it has its clear advantages.

Re-sale value is not something that i care about. The car is worth far more to me than the current market value. A car isn't just for christmas you know!

As for unbalancing the front end weight distribution.... no! If it was further from the mass centre then maybe, but in this case you would never notice the difference.

I hope that was a joke; your corner weights will be way off anyway, with the engine and driver both being offset to the RHS of the car.

I was thinking in mine, the engine is situated more toward the driver's side than the passenger side to losing some weight off that side might be ever so slightly beneficial. All swings and roundabouts. I try to think, "Tesco" in such situations - Every litte helps! :D

Which kind of begs the question as to why do it in the first place ;)
