Which Oil

Featured Replies

I notice there seems to be a trend towards 5/30 grade oil right now, if I was to change the oil at no more than 10k with 10/40 semi will this be harmful to the engine?

I think it's an expensive con myself, granted if the oil does 20k then thats fine, but I cannot see why the makers are insisting on 5/30 right now when these engines have ran fine on other oils for many yrs without any real problems.

Anyone care to comment?

Anyone got any idea?

Do you mean engine makers or oil makers? If engine makers, then as posted elsewhere by oilman, VAG have consolidated their multiplicity of oil specifications for their various engines into a smaller number of specs in order to make the lubrication of their engines more understandable to idiots like me - I'm not sure they have succeeded!!

If oil makers, then be wary of marketing hype. If your engine has worked for a number of years with something like a 10Wxx or 15Wxx viscosity oil, then switching to 5Wxx MAY cause problems, even if the oil meets the engine manufacturer's new specs. As I understand it, the lower viscosity oil may dislodge sludge that the older oils left alone, or may leak past seals that are "conditioned" to the older spec oils and switching back to the thicker oils won't cure the problems.

This stuff still confuses, especially when I think I have started to understand it.

If your car has a PD engine - which I assume that it does - then you must use the recommended VW spec oil which will be 0W-30 or 5W-30. Exactly which spec depends on whether your car is on fixed or flexible service intervals, and whether or not it has a DPF. Your car's Owners Manual has all the info you need.

Yup sorry, I forgot that bit. Look for the "VW 5xx.xx" on the oil container which will correspond back to your your service schedule (QG0, QG1, QG2). I didn't mean to feed you a bum steer. Your SkodaAuto Service Schedule booklet has this info.

It is a PD but theres no DPF luckily, I've been topping up with GM 10/40 and intend to do a filter and oil change every 10k.

I believe the oil has to be of the 0/5w-30 so that it can lubricate the injectors.

Hi,

I just bought some QUANTUM PD OIL from Motorvogue of Northampton.

Around £23.50 for 5 litres. To get this price you have to order through Ebay. Just search Quantum PD oil. They charge £10 delivery reducing for quantity but I collected. They are a Fiat /Alfa dealer and very friendly.
