Advice on HID lights...

Featured Replies

Hey guys.

Was just after some advice on fitting HID lights.

I have spotted a kit on ebay and have spoken with the seller you said that i need the H4-3 Kit, says it does HI/Low beam so seems right.

Find H4-3 BI-XENON HI/LO BEAM HID CONVERSION KIT/S 6000K on eBay within Bulbs Lenses, Lights Lighting Accessories, Car Tuning Styling, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 02-Dec-07 19:13:06 GMT)

How will i go about fitting this in the felicia though, as the wires clip in to the actual headlight unit and then there is a wire inside that clips onto the bulb...

Would i have to use the wire that clips onto the bulb to plug into the HID ballast then plug the wire from the ballast to the bulb? But then i won't be able to but the waterproof cover on the headlight unit will i?

Thanks guys. Any help greatly appreciated!!

p.s. plan on getting the clear headlight/indicator lenses fitted too to make it look extra shiny!!!

Its very easy. Basically the normal plug from your bulb plugs into the wiring loom. Only one is needed. The H4 High means there is a mechanism that moves the beam, hence main beam distance. The wires from your balasts are just plug and play with your new bulbs. For fitting and waterproofing you just need a hole cutter, to cut the headlight back covers and depending on the bults it might come with a rubber seal. If not a grommit will be required.

Hope this helps

I had mounted BoHigh( VisionX) H4 Bixenon 8000Kelvin on my Fun, and the light was brillint, but the high beam, isnt that great.

Road signs are much easier to see with xenon, than with halogen.

But i got caught of the police, so i had to take the HID system of.

Btw, i had 8000kelvin hid in the fog lights also.

I will be going for the 6000K ones which i believe are legal... any higher and thy're not as they're more blue/purple.

Had a response back from Ellri design and will cost 96.80 euro (£67) for the clear headlight and indicator covers.

Here in denmark, HID is only legal if:

The headlight is aproved for xenon bulbs, typical D2R, D2S or D1.

There is headlight washer system.

There is automatic headlight leveler system.

I think the law about this is almost the same in the whole EU.

Best Regards

Morten

I've been intrstead in doing this to my Fun, so 6000K is the limit by law is it?

I think the law about this is almost the same in the whole EU.

Another reason for the Uk to move further from the EU

They are the legal limit as im aware, but ive looked into it further and as stated above.. they are also required to have auto height adjustment and washers on.

So its either... fit them and look good but break the law, or just go with the clear covers and leave it at that.....

better headligths should not be made illegal

so what if they are blue. they dont pulse or flah - (they do its not noticeable)

make police change there colours!

be better to see the road and let other vechiles know your there its a safty feature, police have no right to limit us on brightness.

FACT.

in the daylight the human eye / brain see's the colour yellow first!

in night/ darkness the human eye / brain see's the colour blue first!

now that was proved by a scientist who's name i dont remember. - proves its better to have blue headlights.

when its dark you see in green and black (well, not black, but you know what i mean) because you use your eyes "rod" cells.

HIDs are always a sore point, some people get tugged by the old bill, others dont. i think its down the the cars actual beam pattern and the design to the lights themselves. Plus i think it you go 8k rather than 6k or below you risk being spotted by the police as having a aftermarket kit. Mine own kit being 6k is white light, making the road and road signs light up very well. i dont get flashed by oncoming traffic so im also unlikely to get stopped by police. if i got stopped i would say i have a levelling system (it doesnt say it has to be auto) and i have fitted a washer system too.

just make sure you get your beam patterns checked fairly often to avoid dazzling people ;)

I think if you fit the 4300 or 6000 kelvin hi/low kits you will get away with it. I am the only one out of 4 friends who hasnt fitted a kit, 2 of my mates have 8000k hi/low kits and one has a 6000k and they are all fitted to early 90s cars; They all bought thier kits a few years back when a high/low klit would have cost near £200 and they have never been stopped/failed MOT.

I think as long as they dont put out too much blue light and are E marked theres little to worry about.

After all, the police can just about stop you for any type of vehicle customization, altering number plates even when you keep the standard font and size is illegal to some extent, but ive personally never heard of anyone having a MOT fail or being stopped by the police because of it.

...It all depends on how ruthless your local police force is about those types of minor law infractions.

Regarding lights though, dont put xenon bulbs in your fog lights and dont use them when its not foggy...as you will be stopped and fined.

is that true?

because loads of people round here have there front fog lights on all the time at night,

but why should that be a problem if it helps to see better, they are usually lower than headlights and are very useful.

without fog there far to bright and blind other drivers.

Yes alot of people drive with thier fog lights on, its not clever and its not legal.

The highway code states:- "Front and rear fog lights must not be used unless visibility is seriously reduced - which generally means when you cannot see further than 100 metres (328 feet) - and that they must be switched off once the visibility improves."

The DoT has made any retro-fitting of HID bubls to units originally designed for Halogen illegal. If you change the whole headlight unit that's fine - along with a high pressure washer and auto levelling, but anything else is illegal.....

Interesting article here - from the US but still pertinent.

Saying that, I have fitted HID's to my last four bikes. So long as they are set correctly you should be OK. I have never been stopped by the police for my HID's.

Regarding colour temperature, You should aim for a lower figure!

The higher the figure the bluer the light emitted but conversely less light is emitted and capsule life is dramatically reduced

Hence OEM lamps are 4100k. White light closest to daylight so less fatiguing for the driver and a capsule life of approx 3000hrs

i got a bulb kit the other week from aldi.

it cost £3.99 and had everything in it including 2 xenon 30% brighter bulbs

put them in and they are excellent

Will be going for the 6000k bulbs as these are a bright white colour without verging on looking blue and still provide lots of light output.

Ive seen quite a few cars driving around with deep blue lights and they just look pants!!
