DAB car radio - is it worth it?

Featured Replies

i've had a little look around and can pick up a JVC DAB radio but haven't really heard much about DAB in cars?

Has anyone got one or know someone who has one?

I wouldn't really fancy wiring an aerial to the roof but are the internal glass ones any good?

cheers for all the help,

Shaun.:)

I got a Sony one as soon as I got my Fabia. Its got an internal antenna that sticks to the inside of the windscreen. Looks like a peice of sellotape, so doesnt get in the way. I use the radio more than CD's. there are several different 'channels', each one with differen 'stations' and its just a case of moving through them, no need to fiddle around with frequencies. And there are loads of them. You can use the normal FM too, and if my HU picks up that that station has a DAB output of suitible strength, itll swap to that and vice versa.

might have to get one then, the main reason i started looking was my reception on analogue is really bad so it would so it would be an alternative to that but i also like the idea of having lots of different stations.

Got Blaupunkt one and it seems to work OK...as already said it swaps around as you drive to find the best channel ...a lot depends on what the service is like in your area....but it nworks in most places

all about it here.....could be seven years time.....don't keep cars that long so I won't worry too much

All DAB receivers will be obsolete in a few years' time

I have a Blaupunkt DAB 54. I started off with the glass-mount but it really wasn't very good. It was ok in the cities and most of the major routes, but no match for a proper roof-mount. I got a Blaupunkt DAB/FM roof aerial from Ebay and it works a treat. As long as I don't stray too far from civilisation the signal is rock solid. I very rarely lose the signal and I travel about 1,000 miles a week around the Southern half of England and South Wales (It even works through the Bryn Glas tunnels on the M4 - something FM doesn't do)

Fitting the aerial is a bit of a pain. You need long arms, or a helper, to hold the aerial in place while you do up the nut on the base. Also, the socket on the original is a different fitting to the Blaupunkt replacement on the FM side, so you need to get or make up an adapter. The DAB side uses a seperate cable that needs to be fed through the roof lining.

To finish it all off nicely, I would recommend the proper Skoda facia adapter and, if funds allow, the Blaupunkt CANBUS adapter if you're going for a Blaupunkt HU (especially if you have steering wheel controls).

just read the link above, looks like my radio should be safe as i be able to reflash it as it has a usb socket :)

We cant get DAB where I am, We also only get about 6 stations on FM too! we still dont get channel 5 on terrestrial and forget freeview! we will also be the last place to have terrestrial tv switched off!

I wish someone would do something as I get fed up listening to the same CD's all night, why cant we have sattelite radio like america so everyone can get it!!

I'm surprised you can get nothing at all. Where are you?

I also live in a poor reception area but used to be able to pick up a few stations

but that stopped, so I bought a new radio and still feck all....

DAB is good as long as you have a decent amplified roof antenna. I have the Blaupunkt Woodstock and it works well, i also have a spare Nashville so am considering replacing, maybe.

There are areas around where you will not get coverage so it is advisable to check before buying. As i said i think it's worth it over FM as the audio is just so much better, however, get a decent antenna, it will pay in the end....

Eastbourne, our nearest main transmitter is the Heathfield one, although there are a few relaying transmitters around the town, but they just send the same out as heathfield.

If you live on a hill you can sometimes get line of sight to Hastings and pick up freeview/channel 5 etc but otherwise we get next to bugger all round here, apparently we cant have it incase it interferes with the French?

must admit theres only a fe places in my house that the dab works.

We are the same. Thing is we are due to have terrestrial switched off in 2008! Sky will be the only thing that works!
