Coolant warning light

Featured Replies

Have had a good search but not found anything definite.

My problem is I got in my car this morning after scraping the ice of the windows and started the car. After about 10-20 secs the coolant warning light came one with three beeps (the one with a thermometer dipped on water symbolly type of thing). I did noticed that it was about -2 degrees. I later tried when the ambient temp had gone up to 6 degrees, still the light/beeps. I subsequently checked the level, which seemed ok, I then disconnected what I think is the level sensor which connects to a 2 pronged thingy in the expansion tank. Checked for any crap, none there, so reconnected and tried again. Still getting the warning...

Anyone any ideas, got it booked in with skoda tomorrow (have to take a day of work, bummer...)

mine has started doing this recently!

After a chat with the helpful people at JKM (I think I spoke to Jim). He assured me that this was a common issue and that you need to replace the coolant header tank at a cos of about £15. But as long as your coolant levels are correct it shouldn't cause any major problems. Just a sensor issue apparently.

Hope this helps.

A lot of people cured this problem by scraping the 2 prongs with a screwdriver etc to get rid of the thin layer of crud them

Have just cleaned the prongs and hey presto, no warning beeps. But is it possible that scraping the prongs could damage the sensor itself, I've heard that some level monitoring sensors rely on a coating sensor on the prongs. Hope I'm wrong tho...

It doesn't matter though the other option was to replace the bottle anyway as the sensor are built in. I would think the progs measure the Resistance across the water so if the sensors are dirty then the ecu will think you are out of water.

See how you go with it.

Might syphon some coolant to min level and see if warning comes on again, just to make sure the sensor isn't knackered. Pity it's so bloody hard to read the level in the expansion tank.

Syphoned to min level and check and warning came on, put coolant back (half a pint), warning light did not appear, so I think the sensor is still working ok, but will be looking for new expansion tank soon, anyone have any instructions on how to fit a new one, do I need to change the coolant to do it?
