Hi guys.

Need some advice about tyres. I've got a 3 year old VRs with Continental Sport Contact 2's all round, however the front offside tyre was replaced just before I bought the car 5 months ago - so it's got a lot more left in it than the others. The front nearside needs replacing very soon.

Searching the forums, it seems as though replacing only 1 tyre on an axel is a bit of a no no. Is this always true? If I went for 2, I was looking at fitting some Kumhos ku-31s since they come in at the right price and seem well rated on here. Any other suggestions? Should I rotate the wheels from back to front at the same time?

I was looking at Kumho ku31s today along with Pirelli Pzero Neros and Yoko S306s.

If you're changing both wheels and your budget's around £160 then you can get a pair of Pzeros off blackcircle.com done at a garage near you for £162.88 (everything incl.) or a pair of ku31s for £128.32. Its probably worth stretching to that extra £35 and getting the Pzeros though.

Camskill and mytyre.co.uk could work out cheaper but you've then got to find a fitter that'll fit them for you plus other extras such as labour, balancing, disposal and possibly VAT if that's not included.

As long as the tyres of a similar tread pattern and depth there isnt a huge problem in it but its reccomended you have the same make and tread depth on either side of the axle.

These tyres are by far the best ones i have in my opinion, leagues ahead of the original Bridgestone ER300 and P Zeros i replaced them with.

I agree. I used these Eagles on 2 of my Imprezas and they were nothing short of astonishing gripwise in dry or wet conditions, a huge improvement over the OEM Bridgestone Potenzas that Subaru fitted at the time.

But a little caveat regarding the Goodyear F1 Eagle GS-D3 tyre

I had a few buttock-clenching moments one winter with these same tyres. :eek: I think there is a different compound (GS-D4 ?) that might be better suited to winter use.

Ive heard pirelli are basically a no no!!

p6000's were aweful and i heard the Pirelli Pzero Neros werent much better.

I have heard great reviews of AVON tyres

My dad used to have an evo and tried all sorts of tyres on it, Yoko, Pirelli but the best he ever had were Avon's

My mate has got Pirelli P Zero Neros on his Ibiza FR (1,8T) at 205/40/17. Not bad grip on dry surface, but very very loud. I also think that they ware out quite fast. Also, they really do suck at temp below 8 C.

To be fair, are they dubbed ditchfinders because the person who fitted them to their car thought with them fitted they'd be able to defy the laws of gravity/momentum and take a 90 degree turn at 100mph?

The only time I'm likely to push them is going to be in the dry so their wet handling characteristics aren't an issue.

I've gone with the Kumho's in the end, managed to get them for a little over £126 fitted at a local tyre dealer so not bad:thumbup: Now just need to sort the MOT out:(
