elegance gear stick - leather or not. Dealer query...

Featured Replies

with apologies for posting this inseveral place... must be tired...

hi

got my 1.9tdi estate today... seems good but you have to worry about something when you buy a new car, don't you?

the gear stick/gater is leather on elegance spec? It feels very plastic to me - esp compared to (lovely) leather multi steering wheel. Any thoughts anyone before I pester the dealer?

also dealer said the rear window sunblinds he was going to throw in for free are currently not available in UK - problem over fitting them to estate windows - any thought?

finally - he initially listed first service in the logbook at 10,000 miles - when I queried that he changed it to 20,000...said he'd forgotten that diesels have long life oil so no need to service until 20,000. Either way - car will tell me when?

any thoughts on this approach from dealer?

as I say - you have to worry about something, right?

Cheers

Methinks it's leatherette along with the handbrake lever.

The service can be fixed OR variable.

I have Elegance (Germany) and leather-steeringwheel and also leather-handbrake cover. But the gearstick is not leather...it is plastic + something else than leather....

Funny combination, huh? :) U get steeringwheel and handbrake with leather but not gearstick :)))

If you do not like it, you can order a original leather one (around 50-60euro) and replace it :)

Mine are all leather.

Steering wheel is, handbrake cover is and the gear stick is too.

I say that because the stuff smells so and they all feel the same after a clean with zym*l leather cleaner.

Are the cars with the plastic kn0bs perhaps imports?

Mine looks and feels like plastic rubberything..however on the side facing the back its got stitching like leather! On the ambiente we have at work...you can definitely tell that is plastic!

Dont you have to take it back after 1000 miles after running it in as well?

nope. but i would recommend keeping a eye on the oil levels and perhaps keeping a litre top up.

unless you specified it your octy will be on variable servicing. which means upto 2 years. the car will tell you when it needs servicing. But its worth checking to make sure your dealer (who does sound a little dippy! :)) might have set it up for 10k annual servicing.

theres a way you can see how long you have left till service, but i cant remember how

Key in ignition, engine NOT running, clear all warnings/messages if maxidot present, press and hold the trip reset button until the remaining mileage/days appears.

Re. the parking brake lever and gear gator, doesn't feel like REAL leather to me. And IIRC - the VIN decoder said mine were leatherette!

I just took a piece from the gator under the plastic surround and you can peel the top layer off and it looks very much like vinyl.............

Leatherette is very difficult to spot.

Definately leather on my Elegance 06.

Please let's put photos. Mine is Germany-line Elegance and gearknob is plastic.

Mine looks like this:

Let's guess about this one:

Is it leather? Or plastic? :)

This is available as option (leather):

It would be interesting to get the official line on what is exactly leather on the L&K and what is Leatherette. I think the seat faces are the only bits of real leather.

The latest generation on Leatherette is very hard to tell apart from the real deal.

My gear gator looks like leather but it doesn't feel like leather, doesn't feel flexible enough particularly when it's cold.

my gearstick feels like leather but the gaiter doesnt. looking at the spec list it should all be leather

Leatherette is pretty good these days so if it feels that much like leather than surely that's a good thing? :)

I've recently bought a leatherette Ikea office chair and it feels just like leather, but without the cost. :)

I guess the real question should be, how does Skoda word this in their brochure? If its not real leather, surely, they are misleading with the brochures? No?
