Octy tdi crank-case oil leak

Featured Replies

Hi there

Need some advice, noticed an oil leak at the back of the engine midway up, cannot pinpoint exactly so went to my local mechanic. He took a look and said it was probably a leak from the crank case but would have to clean the engine and observe it running for a period to be sure. He said he has seen several of these. If so he reckons the job could take a day and would require a clutch and flywheel change out costing close to 2 grand. The car is a 02 red i with 100k on the clock, this guy is normally straight up, could he be winding me up, would be grateful for any advise.

thanks

I had oil leak in a similar area on my 110tdi, it turned out to be loose union on the oil feed to the top of the turbo. It had leaked onto the drive shaft and gone everywhere.

Had another good look and the oil seems to be leaking at the gasket just above the gearbox bell housing. The leak is quite small, maybe I could live with for a while. Would re torquing the bolts be an option. Any other advise out there.

Also seem to have a rattle from the front suspension going over rough surfaces, is this likely to be the droplinks and is there anyway to check or are the bushings shot.

A photo of the leak location would be good.

You're in the right area regarding the rattle (droplink or bushes) which will feel loose if worn. I'd leave that til I knew the oil leak wasn't an economic write-off though.

Days are so short and dark, hopefully will get the camera out this weekend and take a few snaps.

Had a snoop around with the digital camera looks like the leak is higher up than I thought, the picture below shows what I think is a breather pipe feeding into the air intake, also noticed oil at the bottom of the intercooler pipe behind the driver side front wheel arch. Could this be the culprit, see pic attached, and if so why is the oil getting blown out here

there will be some oil in that breather pipe from off the top of the rocker cover , it shouldn't really leak from the joint it makes at the intake pipe , there is possibly an O ring inside there , this could of split , it should be easy to pull apart to check it

:iagree: It's much more likely to be a leak from the breather pipe than from the crankcase. If "your mechanic" says otherwise I suggest thinking about finding a new garage!
