Video Re-encoding from digital camera

Featured Replies

I've got some video footage from a Canon Powershot G7. Quality is very good, but files are HUGE (46 secs, 88Mb )

Just wandering what's about, preferably freeware, that will enable me to reduce the filesize.

Cheers,

Steve

Have you tried Windows Movie Maker?

It's built into XP. It's very basic but might do the trick for you.

Another vote for Windows Moview Maker here, you will already have it assuming you run XP and the files are quite small (IIRC I think they end up as WMV files)

Yep - download into WMM, then when you save the new movie, you can even dictate the number of MB the new file will be. :)

Thanks guys - was thinking more in terms of 3rd party apps, but I'll take a look a WMM. TBH I hadn't thought about using that...

does it matter what format ? I convert most of mine to FLVs using Riva;

Riva VX: Riva FLV Encoder

Mainly because most movies get hosted on my site, for others to see.

Thanks, I've used Riva before, but a more 'widespread' format would be better, for the intended audience. It's some work stuff - so WMV/AVI/MPG etc is preferable.

Steve

Oh, I thought flv would be more wide spread than avi etc

I guarantee the intended recipients will never have heard of FLVs. That said, even the other formats I mentioned is pushing it somewhat ;)

Cheers,

Steve

WMV should be the best bet, unless the recipients dont use windows... belive it or not as std windows doesnt come with a MPEG2 codec either!

Thanks again - I'll have a look at the options suggested and report back

Steve

MediaCoder - more than a universal audio/video transcoder

Open source, free, works very well with templates to transfer to various kind of devices too

I've tried quite a few, but it's simply the most flexible one that's no-nonsense and just works :)
