Smelly Fabia - can anyone help? :(

Featured Replies

Hi everyone

I'm wondering if anyone can help? I've done lots of reading on the Briskoda site over the past few days, so hopefully I've got an idea of the problem I have with my Fabia Vrs.

Basically, my car smells, or rather I think the air-con/air circulation system smells.

Today, I went along to my local Skoda dealer where I bought the car 6 months ago to ask for advice, they were useless.

So far I have done the following:

1. Replaced the pollen filter

2. Used a Comac air con cleaner (anti fungal spray can)

But the smells is still there. Ive checked my carpets to see if they're wet and I can't feel any dampness.

I also get misty windows a lot now and when I bought the car, the boot really smelled, but I can't see any leaks.

I'm thinking of taking it to an air con specialist and getting them to check it over, perhaps the drain plug is kinked or blocked? (Although I have no idea where that is located, is it something I could check?)

I ran my air con on cold today for about 20 minutes and there is no water/condensation under the car. I admit it was cold outside, so I might only see this in the summer?

I love the Vrs, but this is really getting to me. Its so annoying getting into a smelly car, when you've cleaned it thoroughly and done everyting you can think of.

Can anyone help, or suggest what I should do now?

Much apprecaited, kind regards.

I dont know where your based but Bickerton Skoda are the people who offer a full air con cleaning service and i think its about £35 ish, not sure.........but may be worth checked with them to have it cleaned.

I would agree with VRS Danny about having the air con cleaned.

However, it sounds like your car is or has, in the past, been damp and never dried out, hence the smell.

I would still check that the doors are not leaking water inside the cabin as well. The interior door panel on each door is a good indicator. If it is damp or wet you know why your windows are steaming up as water is getting into the cabin.

If you are confident they are not leaking you could have the interior professionally cleaned and dried to get rid of the smell.

Alternatively you could use Autoglym Odour Eliminator to spray into your carpets.

Hope this helps.

Is it worth leaving the car running on the drive etc..... with the air-con on warm air & re-circulate for an hour so to try and dry it out once and for all....... I had to do this after i had a leak in my Polo a couple of years ago... (About an inch of water in the front passenger footwell:eek:).... I then did the old air-con bomb thing that i bought from either Lexus or Halfrauds and it got rid of the damp smell the car had.

Other than that then go for the system clean idea.

Cheers

Dave.

thanks for the suggestions so far, I'll check the doors next time it rains. Am I right in understanding you mean the plastic on the inside of the doors?

I'll run it on hot tomorrow for an hour or so and look at getting the aircon cleaned out.

cheers

Are you sure that your carpets are dry? I thought mine were until I checked underneath:eek: sounds a bit strange, but if you punch them (quite hard and repeatedly), any water lurking will come to the top, or lift them and check.

does it tend to be in the back, or the front footwells?

I'll lift the carpets tomorrow morning and take a look.

If they're wet, will I have to pull them all out?

Thanks for the replies everyone.

both my rear carpet underlays were wet, I managed to dry them out by holding the carpet up and blasting with a hot air gun, but takes a while. Finished off with a spraying of wd40 to disperse water and kill the musty smell. Still took several months for the smell to finally disappear. I had 2 leaks, offside due to door carrier leaking, nearside due to rear washer pipe seperating, ho hum.
