Help please, whats the best Diesel

Featured Replies

Hi all, I currently drive a 02 Superb 1.8T Comfort and love it because of its performance for such a big car but due to being a caravanner the car might have to go because it can only pull 1300kg. which it does better that my brothers 2.4 Volvo V70 i'm pleased to say!

I'm looking to changing to a diesel Superb because I can't bare to see the old bus go, I know from reading these pages some diesel have bad points but cant remember which, could anyone point me in the right direction please, I've seen a 52 plate 1.9 TDi 130 Comfort with 44000 on it for £6495, seems a good price but is it one of the good diesels?

Cheers all BryanP

I have a 52 130 Diesel now with 150k on the clock not real complaints at all:rolleyes:

I think you are probably thinking of the 2.0 PD140 which has issues with the Diesel Particulate Filter when used for shorter journeys.

Searching for DPF should find the relevant threads.

The PD130 in a superb is a relatively trouble free unit.

My advise would be to keep the 1.8t and sell the caravan:D

IIRC, the 2.0 PD140 Superb is best avoided due to (unfixable?) problems with the DPF. a 1.9 PD130 ought to do you fine (especially with a remap! :D )

Do you work on top gear in another life?

Believe me I'd love to keep my 1.8T but needs must!

 Clarkson for prime minister! :D

Pd 130 Superb is brilliant at towing ...the torque curve is about perfect and to be honest you wont even know you have a van on ....it's that good .....of course I have heard that a mild remap makes it even better ........ .....

mine does about 30 mpg towing and around 50mpg solo.....I did fit some "dougnuts" to the rear springs to stop it sagging but it doesn't really need them.

worst problem is you will get held up by the slower solo cars

Not by me!:auto:

the 2.5 V6 TDi model won Caravan Club towcar of the year back in 2004.

2003, apparently!. Tried looking to see what year the Golf R32 won it, but it looks as through I imagined that...

I am with you on that one......

52 plate PD130 with 135k on the clock with no complaints.....

I had a 130 pdi and that was brilliant. Very torquey. Done 120k miles in 3 years completely trouble free. Forget the new 2.0 tdi. I've got one now. On paper, it looks the better engine but it's not. Torque and BHP are suppose to be higher and at lower engine speed but I don't agree. 6th gear is useless below 90mph so you would struggle with a van strapped to the back (now there's another Top Gear idea!!!). Fuel economy is also worse. Got over 50mpg from 1.9 but only get 42 with the newer engine.

V6 Tdi is a wonderful smooth engine with loads of grunt (sounds good too!). That would probably be your best bet for towing.

I bought my 130 PS 1.9 diesel as a towcar. It's excellent - pulls a heavy trailer like a steam train and can give 50 mpg unhitched.

I would avoid the V6 which is an ancient engine (Bosch VE pump) and is thirsty for its output and expensive to maintain. The weight of it in the nose of the Superb makes the poor handling worse.

The later 140 PS diesels are not as good as the old 130 PS unit - do a search on DPF problems with the 2.0 litre engine.

Buy the best 130 PS 1.9 litre (engine code AWX) example you can find at your price and haggle like hell - used Superbs don't shift. If buying from a dealer, get a cruise control fitted as part of the deal after you've finished battering at the price. It's the best gizmo on my base model. I don't need a leather gearlever gaiter or most of the other higher spec stuff to tow a heavy trailer.

If you buy from a dealer, see a few before choosing, be prepared to travel and buy in mid January when the weather is at its worst and nobody has any money left - best time for a good deal.

rotodiesel.

I have the 1.9 130 tdi, and it is excellent it has to be said and those I speak to say this is the best diesel engine in a superb

The bigger 3.0-litre V6 diesel is a superb engine, being real-world fast, with near 30mpg economy even driven hard. Trouble is, like the 3.0-litre V6 petrol, few in the UK will buy it and we can't help thinking that Audi missed a trick when it got rid of the old 2.5-litre, five-cylinder turbodiesel, which was reasonably brisk and economical in price and fuel consumption.

2.5

I don't tow, but another vote here for the 1.9 130 TDI PD.

Mine's a company car and the 1.9 is much more reasonable on the co. car tax benefit (lower Co2 rating), and fuel consumption, than either the V6 TDI or the 2.0 TDI.

So much so that I stuck out for what I believe was one of the last few 1.9s in the country rather than go for the new 2.0, especially after reading of StuartJ's woes with the DPF on his new 2.0 TDI.

14,000 miles now and I haven't regreted it for one second. :)

Last time I checked a 5-potter wasn't and couldn't ever be a V6... :D

I think this refers to the good old 2.5 TDI that was fitted to many many Audi's from the 80 up until 02/52 (ish) A6's and, to be fair, is an excellent engine. By all intents and purposes the V6 lump used to replace it (which is different from the 3ltr they speak of in that article) is rubbish.

Well, I say that, it's no TDCI or HDI, of course; but compared to the 5-potter or the PD 4-potter, it's rubbish.
