4 wheel alignment

Featured Replies

I had new tyres fitted recently and the standard front wheel alignment done. It pulls to the left and the steering wheel has to be held at approx 12.30 to keep a straight line. I took the car back and they switched the tracking equipment from front to back given that the steering wheel was dead centre and the front wheels lined up accordingly. They found the problem is at the rear. I know they have a tendency to drift to the left, but I believe this is still an alignment problem and can be improved. I understand it is a fixed beam axle but has adjustable bolts for minimal adjustment to each rear wheel.

Can anyone recommend a good 4 wheel alignment specialist in the South Bucks/Hertfordshire area?

Thanks in advance.

Try another tracking place and see what they say... most will do free tracking check and just charge if they need to make an adjustment....

Martin you could always give me a shout at the Thame Oxforshire branch of Merityre, or do a search for your nearest branch on Tyres, Car Tyres

Thanks to all for your response. Much appreciated.

I can highly recommend Merityre (Chiltern Tyres, Hazlemere), who will check your alignment (4-wheel, computerised) FoC, or maybe £10. Adjustment will be around £65, if required.

I recently shod Wifey's 54 motor with new Bridgestones there (I get a good discount from the RX8OC too :) ), and was alarmed at the rate of uneven wear on the rears -- they were practically bald on the insides, and IMO prematurely worn (actually this is the reason I've just joined this forum, so will be raising the issue in another post, after some more searches!)... So, we asked them to check the alignment too, and sure enough the toe-in was way out on both rears. After adjustment (of all 4 wheels), the car is really something else to drive!

It always had a tendency to wallow at the rear -- sometimes to the point of feeling unsteady, almost dangerous; but I didn't put 2+2 together until I saw the state and rate of wear on the rears. Fronts were worn down too, but at evenly.

I have a '51 110 estate. I recently replaced my front Avons with Toyo Proxes T1R which seem to be very popular on this board. I think they are better. I paid £69.95 per tyre. The Avons on the rear have uneven wear which is particularly bad on the inside of the tread. The tyre fitter reckons this is not untypical of Avons. I too have noticed that it sometime feels a little unstable. I shall be replacing them with Toyo's as soon as the alignment is corrected. Thanks for your input. All very helpful.

Had the same issue with mine.

Tracking was done when I had new tyres and it was pulling left more than it should, I took it to another place who had a look and said that while the tracking was within the 'tollerance' it wasn't spot on. They made a minor adjustment and now it's perfect.

Martin, it's a while back, but one of my mates came with a few miles of having catastrophic failure with Avons on an Escort XR3 (late 5 speed, non-injection model). Avon tried to blame it on him "driving too fast", despite having H rated tyres on a car capable of about 113mph.

I read summat yesterday that worried me - the speed ratings are apparently rated for 10 minutes at that speed, not all day!!!

My mate was hardly ever even on dual carriageway for more than about 5 or 6 minutes at a time, unless stuck in traffic.
