What Car? and Warranty Direct 2007 Reliabilty Test

Featured Replies

Shamelessly stolen from elsewhere, but it does look like the VAG group as a whole are going well down the scale now.

The study analysed data from 26 manufacturers and included 133 different models. Data from more than 35,000 vehicles was studied, and the average age of cars in the survey was 4.9 years.

1 Honda

2 Toyota

3 Subaru

4 Lexus

5 Mini

6 Nissan

7 Ford

8 Citroën

9 Rover

10 BMW

11 Peugeot

12 Mercedes

13= Fiat

13= Vauxhall

15 Volkswagen

16 MG

17 Jaguar

18 Volvo

19 Skoda

20 Audi

21 Saab

22 Chrysler

23 Seat

24 Alfa Romeo

25 Renault

26 Land Rover

Considering how much abuse French cars get on here Citroen seem to have done rather well and Peugeots not too bad...

Rob.

Well SEAT were pitched at being VWs answer to Alfa Romeo, and there they are neck and neck in the relegation zone!!!

Interesting to see Citroen so far up the scale too, certainly not my experience of the marque.

Still, this is just Warranty Direct's own finding based on actual claims, not ones they turned down and there's no reflection on the actual customer's opinions, or whether the customers of certain marques are less finicky(sp) than those of others.

No surprises to see Honda at the top though!

I always like my supposedly "unreliable" citroen BX and Peugot 306.

I had far few problems between the two of them than I have had on either of my skodas. Sure cars are getting more complicated but the pugs suspension was original and fine after 130+k mikes etc.

I for one said a long time ago I wouldn't buy another VAG car until they sorted out their quality issues.

Hondas are quite expensive to buy and run.

or at least my Dads 2002 accord was.

Can't comment on the dealers though as I rarely visited them.

"As good as a vauxhall" is a back handed compliment if ever I heard one...

maybe, but all I've had of most members is grief about how it'll break down, but its fine so far....

I know some other people with Fiats and they have nothing but praise for it.

I used to have a Vauxhall and that was a reliable car until I wrote it off.

any car looked after well will last ages.

I knew a girl with a Corsa SXI (the mk2 from 2000 to 2007) and she was always moaning about it but then from the sounds of things she prob ragged it silly.

I'm only joking.

My GF's Punto has been fine and I'm considering a Bravo Abarth Diesel (if it does get made) as my next car.

well done citroen thats a good result,:D

Rover at no 9? Thats a surprise!!

hhmm.. Ford at no.7 eh.. :P:D

Yes, it just goes to show that just because a company is trading on a reputation of reliability that it earned years ago, it doesn't mean it still deserves it.

Rover at no 9? Thats a surprise!!

Lies, damned lies and statistics.

IIRC Warranty Direct sold a load of warranties to people with newish rovers when Rover went bust. So whilst other brands cars are out of manufacturers' warranty and over 3 years old the Rovers that Warranty Direct are looking after will include quite a few newer ones that shouldn't breakdown anyway, which helps their overall position.

Does that make sense? I've just got home for the night.:D

Mini at no. 5?, more manipulation of the figures. We had a 3 year old one and it was nothing but trouble ABS sensors, PAS pump, electrics and bits of trim falling off.

Then again it depends on your definition of reliability. Warranty direct don't cover everything, therefore the faults that they don't cover don't get included in the survey. You should also be looking at some of the manufacturers who aren't on there due to insufficient claims such as Daihatsu who make extremely reliable cars but they are not out there in sufficient numbers for any data to be gathered. I know one dealer who for August this year submitted one warranty claim and in September this got doubled to 2 warranty claims.

But as you say Daihatsu don't sell a significant number of cars... so you would expect less to happen on the warranty front :D

Also the area of the market they're pitched at people will expect less from them, so you wont get people taking them back for every little squeak or rattle.

I agree with the first part, but I think peoples expectations are based on the age/mileage and condition of the car reagardless of who makes it.

They are represented in the survey to a degree as they make alot of engines for Toyota, who also own a majority share of them. In Japan some Daihatsu models are sold as Toyotas. They just don't suffer from the electrical/warning light problems that I see virtually every day in Skodas.

Must mean that all of them are bad then :P The biggest problem with the WD data is it's based on people who have taken out an aftermarket warranty which I imagine is not many owners of small cars. Ironically, it was my experience of ownership of my small, cheap Skoda which made me take out an aftermarket warranty on the Mondeo!

Still, at least it's fact based data rather than people's opinion data like the JD Power survey :D
