strange tyre wear

Featured Replies

2001 TDi Oct estate with 122k on the clock. Changed the shocks a few months back for the MOT, and last weekend when doing a cambelt change I noticed the front near side tyre is starting to wear its inside edge.

Tyre pressures seem to be ok. I checked the tracking at home using an old track-rite tool and it seemed to be ok. Just been to a tyre place (free check, charge if we fix it) and they could not find anything wrong with it - tracking seemed to be spot on. Car drives fine, does not pull either way.

They suggested maybe a bush or possible wheel bearing. Any other ideas?

I did wonder a while ago if I had a rear wheel bearing start to fail, but when I jacked up the car I did not find anything, but I did not check the fronts.....

I have seen this with a tyre that started to run out of true.

I've had a problem with the steering on my 2003 Octy RS recently, heavier than normal steering and a very vague wooley feeling through the wheel, checked the pressures etc same as you and all seemed to be fine.

So today I jacked her up to have a look and found my n/s/f tyre has also worn on the inside edge. On closer inspection I have found the rear suspension arm bush rubber has cracked and is starting to come away from the steel sleeve it's bonded to. I then checked the o/s and that bush is starting to go the same way.

Think I may have to treat myself to a set of polybushes!

rear suspension bushes that cause the fronts to wear badly.... interesting... if I get a chance at the w/e then I'll have a look.

Sorry,

not very clear in my description, what I meant was the rear bush in the n/s front arm.

not a bush in the rear suspension.

arh now that makes much more sense....

Any idea on the price of a new set of bushes? Mines is only a TDi so not sure I want to go overboard on the expense....

I had a look on the Powerflex web site last night, the rear bushes are £18.95 + the dreaded government cut each, however gsfcarparts (German and Swedish) list track control arms for the Octy @ £32.50 +, if they are infact the front suspension arms I'll probably go down that route as that will replace also the front bush and bottom ball joint at the same time.
