Discs and Pads?

Featured Replies

I'm looking at getting some new discs (front and rear) and pads on my '02 vRS.

I've cooked my brakes a few times now, so im after something a bit better than standard parts (brake fade aint fun!). Also my rear discs look very rusty and grooved.

GSF do some nice cross-drilled Zimmermans and Mintex pads.

What would you guys recommend? (I dont mind paying up to £50 for decent front discs, and then ill get the matching rears and pads).

Cheers

Grooved but not cross-drilled I think would be the recommendation. The reason being that x-drilled discs tend to crack due to stress-raisers around the drillings.

Mintex/Pagid or Ferodo fast-road pads. Don't even think about Green Stuff, cos I've heard way too many independant reports of them warping discs.

Thanks for the advice Ken.

I'll do a bit more research and see what I find.

Consider it mutual backup bonny lass. It's one area where we've much the same experience, acquired completely independantly from each other.

I think youll have to dig deeper than £50 if you want to stop on a sixpence, the more expensive disks for the fronts are £200 or so.

Mintex Extreme pads are what I have on mine. I also have ZeroSixty discs (guess who went to Awesome to get it done! ) The pads are terrific - and reasonably cheap too, but I can't hand-on-heart say that the discs have any discernible advantage over OEM (apart from looking pretty - and prompting certain member on here to comment that they're on the wrong way round! :D ).

That said, I decided to ditch OEM for two reasons - first, I managed to glaze the OEM pads on a fast run, and the grooved / dimpled ZeroSixties are supposed to help prevent this, and secondly, a set of Mintex Extremes / ZeroSixties all-round from Awesome wasn't much more than a full set of OEM parts from the dealer. I suppose I could have got OEM-equivalent from Awesome, but you pays your money and takes your choice...!

Yeah I've just woken up to that! Those Zero Sixty's are £140ish for the fronts! I assume that's for the pair?

Blimey! I still want them though. They sound like the good stuff.

What's better? Bearing in mind i would like to keep the existing callipers and brake system. Someone must make some magical discs/pads?!

I'm pretty sure im gonna go for mintex extreme pads, and I too have glazed my current pads with standard discs so am looking to prevent this next time with better discs.

This is what they look like on a Fabia (standard calipers)

- you can see why folk thought they were on backwards!

Like I say, they're expensive compared to OEM-equivalent sourced from a factor and fitted by an independent, but they didn't work out much more than OEM all-round from a dealer...

Oh, and the pads aren't half dusty - so grooved / dimpled / drilled discs are only going to make it worse (but that's the only gripe I have...!)

Shouldve stuck some 312s on there :D

Yeah, yeah! Had enough trouble getting the pads past the insurance company, let alone bigger discs!

("So how much has the car's power increased by with these pads?" / "Er, none?" / "But surely there must have been some change in the brake horsepower?" / "Oh dear, where to start...?)

You're putting us on surely? Even my Mum knows that the only connection between the brakes and the engine is that they're attached to the wheels!

If only I were kidding! Makes me a little fearful for if I ever have to make a claim (and no, it isn't some dodgy broker, either...):rofl:

Hi

Wow it can be hard work with insurance

The price on ZeroSixty is for the pair

Mintex Extreams are good ;)

You can get better , but hey these are more expensive too , its the old , pays your money

If you need any help on prices , let me know

Pads? Just sand the backing off!

Not so long ago I'd have been right with you, but some of the stories I've heard (especially recently) have made me realise the lengths some insurers will go to avoid covering you in the case of an accident. It's got to the stage where I half think I should ring them every time I wash the flippin' thing, in case they think I've made it more attractive to thieves...:D
