Ok folks - has anybody slit the inner and outer skins of theier glovebox lid to get at the mechanism. Mine has started rattling like a b***ard in this cold weather and it's the mechnism inside that needs a bit of packing/spongey stuff around it.

I've had the lid off and had a poke with a screwdriver but could do with knowing where the clips are so I don't break anything and make it worse.

its bonded together , i tried to get my first lid apart but it was impossible without actually wrecking it , also tried packing it out around the edges , it still rattled

luckily mine was still in warranty and i got a new one for free , unfortunetely this is now rattling , ahhhhhhh

Bonded was what I thought given my initial inspection and wasn't what I wanted to hear:thumbdwn: It's also why I thought I'd aske here before heaving on it too hard with some screwdrivers!

I have already tried adding stick on rubber stops to the edges to try and take up some of the slack in the mechanism and was hoping to split it to put some flet type material between the mechanism and the skin. The rubber stops have worked for about 5 years but now I need something extra.

Looks like I'll have to find an alternative method!

Hmmm... Not such a stupid idea if I coudl only be certain that the mechanism wouldnt stick as well!

spray grease might be worth a try , or even motorcycle chain lube , that stuff is super sticky

No it's not the hing it's actually the mechanism for holding it shut that is inside the lid that rattles. It seems to consist of two bars running across the lid to the handle and in my case these appear to be rattling against the outer skin of the lid.

That makes sense. I tried pulling out the handle slightly while leaving the lid closed, and the rattle stopped.

I presume those bars would not be steel. otherwise bonding a small magnet on the inside could help - assuming it is the outer skin they are rattling against.

Yep that works for a while but not all the time and as the mechanism wears it becomes less effective.

Nope hey are plastic as per the catches that stick out of either end of the lid.

I think the best shot is as suggested above - something pretty sticky/gloopy like white lithium grease that can be sprayed inside the lid and will stay in place but is sticky/gloopy enough to stop the mechanism moving until the handle is used.

Ok well I still haven't tried the spray grease or chain lube but have had some success with an additional rubber stopper. It's placed dead central on the glovebox lid on the lid itself at it's top edge where it meets the main dashboard. It hasn't completely cured the rattle but has lessened it significantly by putting a small amount of "flex" into the lid that appears to be taking up the majority of the slack inside the lid and thus reducing the rattle.
