switching back to skoda!

Featured Replies

i used to have a fabia vrs but swapped it for a seat ibiza FR 20VT about 14 months ago but now i find i need a bigger car and the one that fits the bill best is an octavia. Was looking at late model MK1 vrs but i`ve found they are pricey still for what you get so have been looking at octy II`s instead, seem to give better value and look alot better (to me) than the old model. I`m looking to spend about 10k on one and found a nice 2.0 Sport on autotrader near where i live. Whats peoples opinion on the best model (non vrs, too expensive for me)? i only know a bit about the mk1 and nothing about mkII`s.

thanks in advance :)

the 2.0 Sport will feel slow compared to your Beeza, so are you ready to step down in power?

if that is the 2.0 tdi I would have said the opposite  in gear times for the diesel are about the same if not quicker and you wont get to know your local filling station workers by their first names either

The MKII Octy is a good car, a big step up from the MK1.

If you can get a 140 TDi then it'll be a reasonable car. I've been driving a 140 Golf GT for a little while, it goes ok - nothing special and it isn't overly economical though.

Couple more K's would put you into early vRS TFSi's if you could manage it.

10k really is the limit for me and don`t see how it would be a step down in power as both the octy and beeza have 150PS. would consider a tdi sport but none around. speed isn`t everything......

The turbo will give you very different engine characteristics and more torque than the naturally aspirate 2.0 engine.

Plus the power to weight ratio will give the Octavia a kicking over the Ibiza.

If you can't run to a T-FSI you would be suited to an early 2.0TDI.

You can get a TDI sport for decent money:

thanks for the info tho oxford is a bit out of my way. will keep looking i think. my local skoda dealer has next to no second hand skodas, just trade-ins from other marques...:(

The Oxford one is obviously an example, there are some decent TDI sports out there, you just need to find one less than 300 miles from you :P

Good luck.

My personal preferance would actually be to travel for the right car - especially if on a tight budget. Not that I am saying 10k is a tight budget but you are teetering on the edge of TDi Sports which IMHO offers more than the 2.0FSi.

I think you'd be very surprised at the differnace between the Ibiza and the Octy with the 2.0FSi, they may both have 150ps but it's more about how it's delivered

Octy 2.0 FSi - 150hp@6000rpm & 200nm@3500rpm

Ibiza 1.8t - 150ps@5800rpm & 220nm@1950rpm

Octy 2.0 TDi - 140hp@4000rpm & 320nm@1750rpm

If you are looking at sports it's worth noting that there was a spec change (possibly wk45 2006) which among other things introduced the 3 spoke steering wheel.

thanks, didn`t realise the 2.0fsi had less torque than my 1.8t. furthur searching has found some nice 2.0tdi elegances with the pegasus wheels from the sport on em although one elegance said it had sports suspension and rear spoiler but i thought that would make it a sport and not an elegance? does an elegance have an option for sports suspension?

And is the 2.0FSI really that much worse than the TDI?

On the Elegance, the sport suspension and 17" Pegasus wheels came as one pack. I think it's separate now but thats a recent thing. Same for the rear spoiler, it can be fitted as an option. I would go for the Elegance as the spec is miles better.

The Elegance would make a very good buy. I had a quick search and found several decent looking examples.

i have a 2.0 fsi sport, ok it wont be a vrs, but certainly can shift when it wants to. its certainly isnt slow and loves motorways, is comfy to drive has quite alot of spec to it too including leather pack.

Below is the results for it on the rolling road, the car had only a couple of thousand on the clock and was still tight. Im hoping for better on the next rolling road meet now its loosening up.

Fancy linking to the PD140's as a comparison?

I think both are good enough engines it just depends how you like your power delivery.

It is worth noting that the 2.0 FSI has been replaced now by a 1.8T

its a advanced trip computer display, it also lets you adjust lots of things, check out sticky at top of page octavia tricks and tips, defo worth having, lots of briskodians would't be without it. think its a £120 option, makes the dash look a bit more sorted to.

Dot matrix display in the centre of the dash that shows more info than standard LCD unit, allows the driver access to more options too.

thanks for that. i doubt its a retro fit option tho. :( shame.

Having been in both of them, the 2.0 FSI is much more refined and quieter. It has plenty of poke and revs smoothly and keenly but lacks the shove in the back surge (albeit a very brief one!) the diesel gives. The diesel also may suffer from DMF problems, depending on how it's driven.

I'd suggest driving both before committing, but definitely don't rule out the 2.0 FSI :D

thanks. i will see if i get the time to try both of them. the FSI one is alot younger than the tdi and only slightly more expensive so will see.

I seem to remember a long time ago someone making comment here about not being able to shake off a 2.0FSi in a 1.8T. I don't know how that works out in the real world or how much truth was in it, be interesting though
