Christmas came early!

Featured Replies

Well i have bought everyones presents. So i treated myself on a whim to 1 of the must have gadgets of 2007 / 2008. These babies are like rocking horse droppings for now.

Long story short and 3 empty cash machines later, pi$$ wet through i got one of these ASUSTeK Computer Inc.

In fact i`m typing on this now.:)

Me likes. Everywhere sold out on the internet.

Rare? You should pay a visit to your local Toys R Us ;) Had a play with one at the weekend and I have to agree, they are pretty neat

Damn. Didn`t try Toys R Us. Thanks will let my mates know.

Ps. How much?

Think it was £219. I'm holding out for the 10" model ;)

Damn. I paid £245 due to no fecker else had them. 10" would be awesome.

Still a nice introduction to Linux, and it`s so easy to use my Grandma would be happy.

I wanted one for my little lad for Christmas but couldn't find one so got him a laptop instead  They are really cool:thumbup:

I WANT ONE! Are you going to put XP on it or leave it with the Linux OS?

Then again I got an email through for a Dell Vostro Laptop for £199.00 :rubchin:

Plus vat and delivery :) Comes to a shade under £300 iirc. And you can't compare a 15.4" behemoth to a 7" dinky toy ;)

That looks quite cool... might have to pop to toys r us and have a play on one of those :D

I trust you've seen EeeUser ASUS Eee PC EeePC Forum ?

Thanks for that, now running it in full desktop mode. Just like a normal version of Linux.

First impressions are great, very tweakable but if you gave it to Aunty Doris there is no way at all she could cack it up if run in "simple mode" and she WOULD be able to use it. If you do like to tinker then there is literally so much to do with this thing.

I just like its simplicity. Turn on and use it. A revelation after MS stuff. A full system restore takes less than 5 mins and you don`t have to start turning things off and on to get to a useable state. It just works. Brilliant !

I will definitely leave linux on this, it has all the tools i need to do my job straight out of the box.

Regards Mouse:)

MCSE, ACT and all that bobbins.

I've been keeping track of the rave reviews for this superb little piece of kit, also available in ROI shops as I speak. By all accounts, it does what it does superbly, reliably, simply and in a nice compact package.

Which breed of Linux does yours run? Are the apps X11 based? Sounds like the perfect introductory point to the interweb for Grandma.

We don't normally have to pay delivery through our account manager, plus if it's though work you can sometimes forget about the VAT. Not that we'd ever do anything like that of course! ;)

But you are right about the dinky toy versus behemoth statement, I guess you have to pay for your minituarisation.

Unfortunately us 'mortals' have to pay those things :)

Nothing against Dells though, my main PC is a Latitude D620  Still running Linux on it though.

I was saying the exact same things when I bought my first iBook :D

Lol. And what are your thoughts now?

I would like to do a serious review on this piece of kit but i have only had it 48 Hours, and to be honest there are so many reviews out there on the Internet, but personally speaking, aside from the cost @ £245 or £220 if you can get one, my immediate conclusion is 7 out of 10. - 1 for screen size. -1 for > the fact that if you stick another DDR Ram + 512 MB giving you a total of 1GB ram then you have invoided your warranty (little warranty sticker covers memory slot ) > available from E-Bay. And - 1 because of limited availability. Arrrrgggghhh I want another 1 + 500. Would make life so much easier in the IT support role.

"How much for the 701?" Says I

"£290" Says the storekeeper.

"But, random store down the road says a £1, that`s right a pound" Says i.

"We sell them for a £1 Sir, but only when we don`t have them in stock"

Live and Learn

Still loving my iBook 3 years on... quite tempted by a macbook or macbook pro now though. :D

This Asus Eee PC looks like something I just have in my bag 99% of the time and use whilst out and about... tempted to wait for one with a bigger screen as mentioned earlier, have to see what I think when I see one in the flesh.

Re: the Ram upgrade.. that sounds a bit petty of Asus :thumbdwn:

Cheers Mouse, I'd never heard of these little things til I read this thread. I had some left over birthday cash burning a hole in me pocket so went to Toys R Us today and got the last one in stock.

It's so cool, if a bit of a strain on the eyes. I'm gonna keep it as stock as possible for now as when I start messing, it usually means breakage. I like the Linux jiggery pokery, very nice. No XP install for me!

Let us know how you get on with the RAM upgrade...

Glad you are happy. And you got it at the best price too :).

Just remember if you do like to tinker, then 5 minutes later after a restore it`s as good as new. Don`t plan to upgrade the memory on mine as of yet. Just done a test tonight. Playing an MPG movie from a Windows share on the pc upstairs via wireless and with 7 applications open including Firefox and a 3D penguin game the unit still performs well.

  • 1 month later...

Just found out about these yesterday. They look great!

I'd be tempted to install AntiX on one if I ever got my hands on one. The Xandros Linux that comes as standard is pretty similar to what I'm used to but I'm a bit dubious about it being very true to the usual spirit behind most other Linux distros. I'm not a hard core GPL only or nothing type but...
