Cleaned my throttle body today....

Featured Replies

Well surpised how dirty it actually was... the pipe side of the TB was pretty clean so assumed the intake side would be clean too! I was wrong.

Took it off and used some "gunk" cleaner, pushed the butterfly open with my fingers and got in there.

I've just read this is a bad idea? I didn't push too hard I don't think...

Got everything off and refitted with a new gasket. Is there anything to peel off to get it "sticky".. because the old one seemed pretty stuck on. I just put the new one on as it was as I couldn't seem to peel anything off (so assumed you didn't).

Is this right?

Adapted with Vag-com and the values changed so cleaning it must of done something!

Not 100% on holding the butterfly open, but I do know that the gasket goes on as it is.

Cool, im 50% happy then :)

I pushed it open about 3-4 times probably, didn't require much force....

Drove it after and it seemed ok, so guessing I didn't do any damage.

Quite enjoyed doing it... I like knowing that it's all clean now! (Yes, I'm weird) :D

Well if I'm honest I've cleaned mine 3 times pushing the butterfly and it's been fine.

It's a simple job and I know people who have paid £75 to have that done !!

That's crazy! It took me about 15 minutes....

Its totally ok to do this as far as im aware.... just don't drop anything down there are get any bits of crap in there... i think thats the only danger you have doing it.

The felicia throttle body constantly needs cleaning due to the oil breather feeding directly into the air cleaner and throttle body... can make a world of difference having a shiny clean throttle body!!!

Have you noticed much difference now it's clean?

In all honestly? Not really... although i've only done a few miles so far.

I'm still trying to get rid of this surge/hesitation at 3000rpm, it seems to be when I lift off the gas at around that rpm so am trying different things to cure it!

The gasket was only £1.75 and it only took 15 minutes or so, so worth doing anyway. I doubt it's been done in the 65k the car has done.

DO IT!

I see alot of people are doing this, are you following instructions from a haynes manual or is there somewhere I have missed here on the forums?

There are loads of threads of the forums about it!

But it's basically;

Remove large pipe,

Remove smaller breather pipe (you'll have to get a new jubilee clip for this),

unclip sensor,

Undo the 4 5mm allen keys,

Pull from intake...

Clean like a mofo, take the old gasket off and put the new gasket on.

Refit in reverse, it's pretty easy to do.

Hi ,

I have a 1.4 16v fabia 2001

I'd like to clean the TB myself but I understand that after you remove it you need to reset the unit and I do not know how to do it.

Can you advice?

thanks

I really must do mine as goodness knows when it was last done.

Let us know if you notice any difference.

Just done mine although it wasn't that bad but the bit under the butterfly thingy was getting gunked up.

Smooths the idle a bit and thats about it

If you don't disconnect it. It doesn't need re setting

lol, don't forget the cage mod for the icing on the DIY cake....

Cheers

Bas

Never thought about not disconnecting it !

Thats whats stopped me cleaning it, as i'm not sure my unlicensed vag-com would re-align.

You need to d/c it to do it properly.

Not being funny or owt but why do you say that ???

Because to clean the other side of the butterfly is going to be very awkward and not thorough at all.

The intercooler side for me was clean, it was the intake side that was filthy.

If you are cleaning the intake side with it on, I bet you some of that crap gets into the intake manifold.

Take it off and clean it all properly, including all round where the butterfly sits with a cotton bud.

Takes 10 minutes in total so I don't see why not!! :)

Cross wires......lol

I should have said unplugging it.

If you don't unplug the electrcal connector you don't need to re align it with vag com

:P

Doh!

I still don't understand the reasoning behind that tho. The whole point in realigning it is because the characteristics have changed due to it being clean?

I was told that all the re-align does is open the the butterfly fully and then close it again so the ecu knows its movement limits. Hence the re- alignment ain't needed when you have removed the clag. And assume that when we clean them the main clag is round the edge of the butterfly albeit on the inside of the housing, which leads me to think that the butterfly is closed when idling and then the airflow is upset by the clag layer. As for the 17705 code I think it works it the same way but theres some much clag it upsets the ecu under boost and throws the code.

Whoa ..........that was technical for me, of course I may be totally wrong in which case I deserve everything I get:O

Great discussion going on,

what I understand now is that I can remomove, clean the TB and refit it .

I haven,t the software for resetting it but I am sure that if you disconnetct the battery long enough, the ECU will loose all the learned values.

When you reconnect it the ECU should read the new value and set all the components to run with the new setting.

I have never done to my Fabia yet , but I will after cleaning the TB.

Whish me luck
