hand brake broke

Featured Replies

Went to put my handbrake on this morning. Pulled it, and it just kept on coming (no jokes please!) Has gone up about 3 times further than it should. Was just around the corner from the garage so have booked it in. Not sure what it is. Anyone any idea?

Thanks

Mark

Broken cable probably. Pretty straightforward for a garage to fix if it is.

Is the handbrake still holding the car? If it is, then worth checking things like brake fluid level, amount of meat on the pads and thickness of the discs. Are there any problems using the footbrake?

The foot brake is fine. Disks and pads fine also. It felt like something slipped as I pulled it. Could the cable have slipped through a retaining clip/clamp?

It does still just about hold the car but I have parked it in gear as i wouldn't trust it.

Thanks

Mark

I have a fabia as a driving instuctor car and have have had a pupil completely rip the mechanism away from the bodywork.

Couldn't believe it when I removed the plastic surround and found all the spot welds broken.

I repaired myself with drill and rivets but have always been quite carefull with fabia handbrakes since.

Hope this tale amused you!! but hopefully you have just had the cable slip.

At first I did think I had done something major but i think it is just a slipped cable. Just had a quick look at it.

Might have a proper look tonight. If I can fix it then when I take it into the garage they can look at some of the other bits that need doing under warrenty.

i found that happened in a roomster and when i looked under the gaitor it had simply come off from one side. with a quick loosen up to slip the cable back on and then retightening it, it was fine!

Sorry for bumping an old thread, but this is pretty much what happened with my 2000 1.4 Fabia Comfort recently. I complained to the dealer three or four times about the handbrake not working, and they kept adjusting the cable, but it was just as bad within 5 minutes.

I ended up taking it to a mate who is a mechanic and he took the plastic surround off and found that it wasn't just that the welds had gone, the metal was actually ripped away. Now I'm not ham-fisted in any way, so I was very peeved about this. Bob welded it back together for me, and I've never been back to the Skoda dealers since, because they should have found the problem earlier, knowing that I'd been back to them several times in a month with the same issue. I always leave the car parked in gear now, even though I don't like doing that, because I'm paranoid, LOL.
