Pics of mongrelling - Day 1

Featured Replies

Today was a relatively short day. Started at 11am, finished by 3.30. A full day will be spent on her on monday though - I have the day off work already. The pics below were taken when I got the chance. I was mainly the "torch holder" and occasional "hold this bar there to stop that turning whilst I undo this bolt" man.

The mongrel gets ready for major surgery....

This was the pile of "bits" to do over the next day or so. BMC box, O2M box with peloquin diff ready installed, SPEC clutch + brake pads, water reservoir and cupra bushes.

DSCN1653.jpg

Airbox was out pretty sharpish. LPG and NOS bracket moved over, out the way.

DSCN1654.jpg

Front left wheelarch liner removed for ease of access. I love my brakes.

DSCN1656.jpg

Starter motor off, and the reverse light connector undone (without breaking it, go me! :D)

DSCN1657.jpg

Once I'd battled with a few bolts, we managed to get the subframe off complete. Cupra bushes to fit whilst this is off the car.

DSCN1658.jpg

Work begins on detaching the driveshafts from the diff.

DSCN1659.jpg

This was "lunch" for me. I'd already scoffed the steak pasty....

DSCN1660.jpg

Driveshafts hanging down. Thankfully did not need to remove them... which was handy given I had not got new hub nuts in advance of today.....

DSCN1661.jpg

Gearbox mount begins to be detached from the chassis

DSCN1663.jpg

The clutch plate of the new clutch.

DSCN1664.jpg

Gearbox end drops a little more....

DSCN1665.jpg

The "grabber" - (no idea of it's real name...) comes up to take the strain of the gearbox. Capable of carrying a ton in it's jaws, so a 6 speed box is easy meat for it.

DSCN1666.jpg

And the gearbox is sat on it, safely lowered out of my engine bay.

DSCN1667.jpg

First glance of the old clutch. Note the SACHS stamp at 2 o'clock on it....

DSCN1668.jpg

And once it and the DMF came off.... The clutch is a little bit FUBAR'd, but was oddly enough still going quite well in my motor. Maybe it looks worse than it really is.

DSCN1669.jpg

New flywheel is offered up to the engine.

DSCN1671.jpg

I got this, and although out of focus, I thought it was quite an arty photo. (for a crappy digital camera)

DSCN1672.jpg

And last thing done today - bolted the rest of the SPEC stage 3+ clutch up. Now home for a bit of rest. More to do on Monday!

I lifted a lightweight flywheel for a PD engined GOLF before, and it was a bloody job. Very heavy in comparisons to a Petrol but different strain levels?

How 'light' is that flywheel? Mine weighs 4.00kg. Weighed :D

I measured the weight with my hands, and came to the decision of "Sweet f*** all!" :D I think it is around 9lb. My mate reckoned my old DMF weighed 3 times as much, when he held them in each hand at the same time.

Pictures speak a million words matey :D looks good although i am absolutly positive that old clutch is a con and what jbs are selling is a heap of S*it

Take my word for it Jas, you will luuuuuuv it.

Good man  Those pics bring back memorys.

Mines all bedded in nicely, its brill

That pressure plate looks exactly the same as the one ive juts put in mine, but obviously its red :D

Hmmm, so it may appear (to be confirmed later upon proper investigation / fact gathering) that I was sold a sachs clutch? Hmmmm. Bring on Monday morning.

i have a spec light weight alloy flywheel for my 1.8T ready to fit, if i can i'll weigh it for comparison james :D

My bet is on 4kg as well. I'm sure I was told mine was 9lb, which is basically 4kg too.

sachs cover yes, driven plate deffinately isnt ours. For a start it has the torsion damper springs on ( the small springs in the middle of the plate) all our paddle ones do not have them, infact i dont even think the organic one has the torsion damper springs on them.

The cover deffinately is ours, but whether its a uprated one or not i cannot say by the pics..... if it hasnt got sachs race engineering on it then it deffinately isnt an uprated one..........

Just looked on JBS's website, and this is the Kevlar clutch they list

Kevlar-Clutch2.jpg

Note the housing on the cover............... it has jagged edges at the base of the diaphragm fingers, as apposed to the sachs one below which has a round edge on the housing.

well my scales only go upto 3kg but my flywheel is definitly lighter than 5kg as its lighter than some weights me have to hand but exactly what weight it is i cannot currently say but some where between 4 and 5 is a definite.

i'm gonna go googling now :D

well my scales only go upto 3kg

Do they only do 16ths, 8ths........etc.

That sounds potentially dodgy. :D But I guess that's one way to afford to mod cars to the extreme. :D

:haha:

thats why i haven't got it on the road right now, its not broken at all its been impounded waiting for the trial

you know Jason - I've often thought how lucky we are that you're into modding derv Fabias... Imagine if you had been into modding BMW's or Honda's.(!!!)

Power to you mate.

Imagine if you had been into modding Honda's.(!!!)

What sort of PrAt would do that. :thumbdwn::thumbdwn::thumbdwn:

Hahaha...

You spoken to JBS today ?

You spoken to JBS today ?

Not worth it.

seems a bit out of order though if they are advertising something as one thing when infact it could be something completely different.....

Maybe its the red paint that is rated to 400 lbft torques?

Well, I can tell you the metal on the inside of the clutch plates also had SACHS written in it, but I will clarify details like part numbers and so forth - I have the old clutch plate with me in the car. :D
