First Superb Problem?!?!?

Featured Replies

Well it pains me to post up this but I believe I have a problem with the Superb.....

Over the past few months if you stand towards the boot of the car, with the engine running, there is a strong exhaust smell that has now got a lot worse. Can't smell it inside the car, I have no engine running problems with no power loss either.....

So is this the CAT gone, is this a section of the exhaust gone or is this something more problematic with the engine? Car on 135k and I replaced the CAT on my Bora around the 120k mark but I don't remember the fumes smelling like this when it went on the Bora, could well be because the Superb is a Diesel?

Any suggestions would be gratefully received, I have all the prices for the exhaust system from Skoda and the car is booked into my local garage to diagnose the problem on Wednesday but I thought I would see if anyone else has any ideas?

Certainly sounds like a leaky exhaust, could be anywhere though.

Just get under it and have a look for black deposits - it should be fairly obvious if its blowing. :)

The cat is in the engine bay, so probably not that tbh. :)

Not sure how much those bits cost that you mention but it does sound like a convincing explanation, unless you farted at the same time or something?! Is the smell there when the car engine isn't on?!! :P

Get under the car? Are you joking......it's on the floor......LOL..........fair point though mate I will check it out.......

Hope it isn't the Cat as it's fairly expensive but to be fair so are all the other components in the Exhaust System.....

Which part of the exhaust stops the smelly gases anyway?

LMAO.......certainly wasn't me farting mate and if it was then I have some serious body problems let alone the car.......

Nah only when the engine is running......

I don't think it is the CAT as you would loose the power too. It happened on my Passat last year and at the point I wasn't able to go over 40mph ... just remembered how painful and expensive it was

TBH with a diesel I don't think you'd notice and poor performance.

Why not? What's the difference between the CAT on the Petrol to Diesel engine's?

A smelly cat isn't a faulty one Simon, is the smell sulphur based? if so try some fuel from another garage next time to see if it isn't something to do with the existing fuel.

Other than that you may not be getting a correct burn in the cylinders leading to the cat compensating and smelling, though this should be evident from the sound of the engine if something is wrong.

In the event that it is a cat, iirc you can just replace it with a through pipe, as derv's aren't actually required to have a cat, hth.

Sulphur.......hmmmmm.......unsure of how to describe it.......smells like a dirty diesel.....LOL!!!

Don't need a CAT? Is that correct?

You will need to find out for sure, but some of the Vx guy's run without one, I can ask questions for you if you like.

Dirty derv, my money is on just that, run it down and use another station before you go spending, I put some V power in mine this week, does seem to give it some vit C.

I don't think it's specific to any Diesel I have bought as it's got worse now with the weather as it is so guessing it's something more serious.......

Be good if you could find out?

The diesels will run fine without a cat for sure, yes. Technically illegal, but would pass mots etc just fine. :)

Try some fuel treatment, this will clean out most built up deposits, Also check if your council run a fuel emmissions check, ours do it in one of the retail parks carparks and its free.

Be careful with that Simon, a mechanic told me not to flush the fuel system, it does damage to the seals and the pump according to him.

Reckon I will just wait until tomorrow when my mechanic has the car to check out the problem.......

Thanks for all the ideas though guys and I will update you shortly.....

Well I have just got back from the garage and after having the car up on the ramp nothing on the exhaust could be found wrong......

Both the guys were unsure of what it could be and suggested that as it's colder now then maybe the deposits in the engine are a little clogged up, so I bought some additive but Supurbia reckons that this is a bad idea? Can anyone shed any light on it?

I am not doing many miles in the Superb at all nowadays as I live and work in the same town so maybe she is missing the long motorway blasts that she used to get every day?

I have been assured it's OK to use in my engine......

Read what the book has to say concerning fuel and oil additives. Use fuel and oil to the relevant VAG specifications and save your money.

rotodiesel.

Not additives Simon, cleaner treatment's like Redex,STP etc, I can't advise about putting octane boosters etc, but I was told by a Skoda man not to use the fuel equivelent of engine flush, I'll see if I can find some info on it.

the cats can get clogged up an become smelly if your only doing short trips and not often, i would recommend running the tank down low, getting some redex diesel additive and fill up with some different fuel as mentioned above, then take her for a good blast on a motorway to clear her out, i know when i used to work for vw we never used to recommended proper injector flush as mentioned can damage fuel pump seals, injectors seals etc,

I'd try giving the car a decent run out on the motorway and see if that helps. My Bora used to feel better after a decent run out.

How come you're not doing many miles now?

Have you changed jobs or moved house?

If you do decide to use fuel flush, do it this way, open the diesel filter, drain off half of it and top up with the cleaner, I found this is how the pro's reckon is best for inj cleaning rather than a diluted tank method, but as I said it's been told to me by someone who should know, not to do it at all on a TDi engine, I wanted to do mine tbh cos I don't like how heavy it smokes when you boot it.

Do you run with Millers in the tank Simon? If not, try some :)

Yeah might try that mate but I'm not well at the moment and have been at home for the past two days so may do it over the weekend....

I am living in Banbury now and with Hella being in Banbury I don't travel as much as I used to do....
