Unusual oil warning light

Featured Replies

Yesterday i had driven about 15 mins on A-roads to get to the motorway, after about 5 mins on the motorway the red oil light came on with three loud beeps, then continued flashing. I pulled off at the next junction and lifted the bonnet, there were no signs of a problem, all caps and plugs in, no leaking oil. So i continued on my way and the alarm came on again after about 30 seconds and continued flashing for the whole journey. There and back i covered about 70 miles, with no obvious signs of a problem or affected performance, i guess if it was a major problem it would have stopped me. The oil was only topped up the day before, it is at the top of range, maybe a little over. The orange light doesnt come on and there is nothing on the oedometer screen, the red light doesnt come on when starting, just after the engine has been revved, not at idle. All i can think is that there is too much oil, but the fabia ('00 1.4 8v mpi 73000 miles) doesnt have an oil level sensor does it? I may have mixed oil grades when topping up but cant imagine that being a problem.

From what i can see on here is that it is mostly a pressure sensor problem, only there seems to be nothing confirmed or conclusive. So think im going to do an oil and filter change and see if that cures it. So any help or opinion will be appreciated.

It will be the pressure sensor (it doesn't have a level sensor), if you disconnect the plug you will probably see oil in it. Sensor is around £10 and easy to fit, it is on the passenger side of the block close to the oil filter.

Thats great, my next question was going to be where it is, assumed it was the plug i could see next to the oil filter, i'll have a look when the daylight returns tomorrow.

Be aware that many engines have more than one pressure sender. One to indicate low pressure under all conditions, the other (switching at a higher pressure) indicating problems at say over 2000rpm.

A lot of older VW/Audis suffered a problem with the circuitry on the higher pressure warning and would randomly sound a buzzer when motoring over 2000rpm. One of several Audi 80 Sports I owned would play up like this. It had a knack of scaring the **** out of me at speeds well in excess of 100mph by sounding the buzzer and flashing warning lamps. Fortunatly these cars were equiped with a pressure guage and I never saw less than about 4 bar whilst driving so I knew it was nothing serious.
