Octy II Fire extinguisher - How to.

That first pic doesn't look as if it's anywhere near as close to the pedals as I thought it would be and it looks pretty neat too :)

Why do you need it for a 2000 mile drive in france, an extinguisher is not a legal requirement. Even if you plan to travel into belgium where it is a legal requirement foreign registered vehicles are exempt. I drive all over europe in the summer without one with no problem. Another thing to consider with small extinguishers is they are likely to be useless on car fires as they empty very quickly.

The reason I fitted one for Belgium is it makes life easier, because they have played dumb before on the foreign cars not having to have them with people I know. For this reason a small amount of cash was worth it.

TBH since it's powder and quite small, and macabre as this is, I think it's more use for putting a persons cloths out quickly if a car does catch fire.

At long last my extinguisher bracket arrived from the dealer and I've fitted the bracket and extinguisher this evening.

With a little care, it's quite possible to fit the bracket to the seat without removing the seat, which in turn removes the need to disconnect the battery (although I did).

Disconnecting the battery on our FL Octavia 2 resulted in the electric windows failing to work on the one-touch setting (cured by keeping the window button depressed in the fully-up position for 10 seconds per window) and the power steering and ESP lights coming on. Both PS and ESP lights went out after about 10 seconds of driving.

If you are going to disconnect the airbag cables, I wonder if merely disconnecting the battery is sufficient. I understand that they're fired by capacitors which "store" the voltage when the battery's connected, and waiting for a while (perhaps 30 minutes) for the capacitors to discharge may be wise before undoing the connectors.

regards

P.

While it might be possible to do this without removing the battery, I would strongly advise against this due to the seat airbag.

Sure it might save a little time, but that's a very expensive bill should it go off, never mind the risk to yourself.

I do agree however that waiting for a short time is probably a good idea too should you wish to minimise risk.

My dealer supplied me with an extinguisher without any problem.

I have a 2010 Octavia with the telephone unit fitted under driver's seat. Do you know if the extinguisher will still fit there?

It should do as there is a gap between the extinguisher and the floor using the official bracket.

If you know how high the phone unit is, from the carpet, then if I get a chance, I can measure the gap below the extinguisher for you.

Shame all the original photos have vanished :( Does anyone have any photos that they could share please?

Thanks
