New brake pads not making full contact?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Had my front discs and pads replaced, anyway still bedding them in gently (200 miles so far).

Was cleaning the car today when I noticed that the brake pad doesn't actually make full contact (when normal) on the disc but the rears do.

Is this normal? You can see the gap at the back there.

There are no strange marks on the disc.

There is usually a bevel on the pad so the edges won't contact with the disc, it's not the best photo but it looks normal to me.

Are there any efficiency issues?

Well, I actually went back to the garage today and they said the ends were... I can't remember the word. But basically that's normal.

I've done 250 miles on them and bedded them the other night properly (5-6 50-30mph medium stops, 2 x 70mph-20mph hardish stops and 1 70-0mph hard stop).

They aren't feeling all that great at the moment, but I think they'll start to feel better in a few miles I hope.

Yes mine are the same(Tarox) it's a shamfered edge so they don't wreck the discs(Or something like that)

That's the word I was looking for, felt like a bit of a **** when he explained that's what it was.

Ah well!

Just got to find out why my clutch/gearstick is vibrating when changing gears now! :P

shamfered edges stop pad squeal

this is especially noticible on new shape Ford Focus , spurious pads tend not to have the shamfer and they squeal like a pig , standard pads with shamfer = no noise

Ah cool, thanks for that mate :)

My rear ones aren't shamfered which was why I thought the fronts were a bit "off".

Just hope they become a little sharper in the weeks to come!
