Totally sorted thanks to inlet manifold gasket

Featured Replies

Hi All

You may remember in a previous post i was moaning on about the following:

- lumpy idle

- idle speed being higher and sticking until i blipped the throttle

- general flat spots

Well i did promise that i would change both the throttle body gasket and the inlet manifold gasket. I first of all changed the throttle body gasket and it made no difference, however i have this afternoon took off the inlet manifold and replaced the gaskets and what a difference.

all is now well and it idles perfectly at 800rpm with no flat spots, lumpiness or sticking throttle.

If you have the same symptoms i would thouroughly recommend doing this as a matter of course as the old gasket was made of some card material and had disintegrated. The new gasket from skoda has a metal insert inside and is much more substantial. It only cost a few quid.

Very easy to change gasket as well and only difficult bit was scraping remains of old gasket off. 2 hr job in all

whoopee for the first time since i had car it runs as it should and i went through all eventualities before resorting to this gasket. With my recent timing chain it now purrs like a kitten and has a lot more go in it.

:D:D:D

Nice one glad all is now sorted

:)Well done.

Skoda engines are so nice to work on compared to others.

Nice fix. The lumpy idle does sound like an inlet air leak.

A quick test is to spray brake cleaner round any intake manifold joints at idle and see if either the revs smooth out or there is smoke from the exhaust as the brake cleaner gets drawn in.

Thanks

yeah i did that but it wasn't immediatly obvious from doing this that it was at fault as the leak was in numerous places judging by the state of the old gasket both at the top and bottom

All fixed now though and i assume that the new gasket design is uprated because of this problem, and much easier to work on than other engines i have had to rip apart! :)
