Leaking Coolant - Is it a problem

Featured Replies

I have a 1.4 fabia 2000 model - Its the 1.4 MPI

I replaced the radiator fan and coolant in June and yesterday the temp light came on in the car - The car was about 700 ml down from the max levels.

I have topped it up now but is it a problem and should I take it down to the garage.

One mistake I made was the garage used normal anti freeze and not the G12 which is recommended - Do you think that is the problem?

Advice appreciated.

Thanks

I don't think that the garage using non VAG approved coolant additive is your problem - I would think that they have used a suitable alterative - but not one that you can add G12 PLUS successfully. You might now have a leak and that needs to be investigated as it probably will not "go away". In the mean time, top up only with something like a 50% water-coolant additive mix and just buy suitable for aluminium stuff - not G12 PLUS until you have fixed the leak and emptied all the water out (is that is what you finally want to be in your car). Just remember that alternative additives should be replaced after a few years - maybe changing back to G12 PLUS for life. I nthink if you use search, that there has been a lot of people having problems with low coolant warnings in this colder weather - could be a problem with the level sensor, as well as what I've said above, just top it up as advised and keep an eye on it, if topping up is required every week then get it looked at sooner than later, if it only needs topping up once a month or so then maybe leave it until the weather improves - ie May! Remember to check it weekly or more often (daily) when cold until you can trust it - don't wait until you get these warnings. I'm sure you should also check the oil level and brake fluid levels at the same time - you know it makes sense.

One other thing, did you check the level a few times after the repair, if not it might just be that there was air trapped in the system and now its moved into the expansion tank and now its only the cold weather or a faulty level sensor that has drawn your attention to the dropped level.

Thanks - I ll keep my eye on the level of fluid

Have you any visible leaks ? Also have the tempertaure sensor checked (its on the radiator) that was leaking when I bought my Fabia , its a common problem and is a cheap fix.
