Fabia 1.9 TDI (100bhp) Gearbox Noise

Featured Replies

I have a noise which is apparent with clutch pedal released but not when depressed - my Haynes manual points to Gearbox Input Shaft Bearings.

Working on the assumption this is the problem - and I wanted to get it fixed rather than leave it - any idea on man-hours for the job?

Had same problem with mine, it was sorted under warranty & dealer had it for 2 days. Hope this helps

Thanks for the info - anyone else have any ideas on hours / cost and if it's ok to leave as is ?

Anyone :(

Clutch release bearing. Had this on several of my old cars and 2 of the SWMBO's cars.

I have a spare cheap 5 speed box if you find you need to replace it all. :)

If it's the release bearing, then it's a relatively easy fix, but it's the time to remove/replace the box which adds up to a few man hours.

Release bearing is about 38 quid, problem is its about 4 hours labour to replace.

Agreed, getting at it is a big job. Battery and airbox off, gear linkage removal, N/S suspension dismantle, drop the gearbox and you're in.

For the labour you might as well slap in a new clutch whilst you're in there as that's where most of the cost goes. :(

Thanks for all the info - very helpful.

I got a quote of @ £350 from Skoda to replace the clutch (including release bearing) . . thing is the noise I have is when I'm in neutral with the clutch released (ie. my foot not on it) When I depress the clutch (push it in) the noise goes - Haynes manual suggests this is the Gearbox Input Shaft Bearings and not the Clutch Release Bearing - and it lists the noise as the other way round if the clutch release bearing ??

This is correct, sorry i misunderstud your first post.

Noise in netural with clutch pressed defo sounds like input bearing. this would require the box splitting and new bearings installed.

Might be cheaper to find a second hand box or see how much jason wants for his :D

Ah, yes, I misread it too. :o The release bearing comes into play when the clutch is dis-engaged, as in pedal pressed. At other times it should not be spinning.

As far as I know anyway.... :)

Wrong way round matey, bearing in the fabia is a hydraulic one in that it operates the clutch plate. with the clutch peddle pressed the bearing expands to puch the clutch fins in and is turning,

and with the clutch peddle released the the bearing relaxs engaging the clutch but is still in contact with the fins so is still turning.

Basically it turns all the time so if it were knckered you would be able t operate the clutch and you would have a noise all the time :D

Ahhh, I see. Gotcha. :D

Have you asked a garage about the noise? The gearbox in mine's a little noisy in the same way that yours is. Last time that it was in for service I asked the garage about it and they said that it was totally fine - in fact they struggled to hear the sound. I've done well over 20k and it's not got worse and a gearbox will have some noise of course.

If it turns out that it's cheaper to replace the whole box rather than the input bearings, why not just wait until it's really bad and do it then? You'd have very little to loose and you never know, it might never need doing anyway...

Thanks for the info everyone. It's an annoying noise but the gears work fine so I guess I will wait until the clutch needs replacing and resolve it one way or another then.

Might keep an eye out for a cheap low-mileage gearbox in the meantime though . . . anyone know the code/type I need? :) thanks
