Unexplained three chimes warning

Featured Replies

I have a 1999 Octavia 1.9 TDI. After driving for an hour or so, I am getting a repeated three chimes/bells warning sound, but no warning light appears on the dashboard. This only happens after a longish run and not on starting up/when cold.

My local main dealer told me this was caused by the service interval display not being reset (after they serviced the car in the summer), but resetting it did not cure the problem.

The owner's manual suggests that this warning should only sound when either the coolant or the brake fluid levels are low (at least, I can't see any other mention of it in the manual). I have checked both fluid levels and they are fine.

I have also looked at posts on both these topics and all seem to suggest that a warning light would come on on the dash if the low fluid level sensor was triggered. Both warning lights are apparently working normally on starting the engine.

Can anyone suggest what might be setting off the warning sound and how to fix it?

it could be the temperature dropping to 4 degrees or less (esp at this time of year)

Thanks for the suggestion. I am not sure that the car has such a frost warning - it doesn't seem to be mentioned in the manual.

It could also possibly be a fault in the ABS system (I've just noticed that the owner's manual mentions a major ABS fault can cause an audible "3 peeps" warning) but if so I would have expected the ABS warning light to have come on.

If the outside temperature drops below 3 or so degrees then I don't get any chimes in my 2001 TDi elegance, but the dash display does swap over to temp.

Oil level warning causes a single long beep, as does windscreen wash solution level. I think brake fluid again is a single long beep.

3 beeps sounds a bit like the seatbelt warning chirps/chimes.

Maybe someone with vagcom in your area could check out the car for you.

The mystery is solved. Somewhat sheepishly I have to admit the noise was not coming from the car but was from my Tom Tom sat nav (speed warning).

I had a warning i never heard before on saturday.

I left the hand brake, slightly on and it beeped at me 3 times. By the 3rd beep i had released the handbrake fully, so im not sure if it would have continued more.

I think it will keep on until you release the hand brake Matt
