What's this clunk?

Featured Replies

Advice please: daughter just said "there's a funny noise with my car". It's a Fabia Mk1 1.4 petrol Classic, done 55K miles in 5 years; one owner. Took it around the block. There's a fairly loud clunk when releasing the clutch when changing up (which can be reduced by doing a long, slow release of clutch). And when applying the brakes, there's a similar clunk. Noise seems to come from front offside.

To my very limited knowledge, that sounds like a CV joint gone?

If it is, can she drive it for a few days until it's fixed?

If it isn't, and ideas?

Many thanks.

I had a clunk when pressing the clutch to change up gear from 1st to 2nd and to 3rd too. Mine was the N/S gearbox mount needing greasing but that's on a vRS.

Try opening the bonnet and really rocking the engine on its mounts. Anything unusual?

CV joint failure is normally acompanied by repetetive clicking/ knocking when turning bends (knock knock knock as the wheels go round).

Also check the front anti roll bar collars to make sure they're still where they should be. ARB's are known to clunk during engine shifts and when braking when not held in place properly.

A sticky is on the main page for details on this. :)

Your rear engine mount has probably failed you. Had that problem a long time ago.

My thanks to Mil and Chrispy for their advice. In the event, it was a bush on the lower arm which had disintegrated. Now fixed. What am useful forum!

Yes, sorry for not giving you that idea earlier, its just a shame that she did not get both bushes changed for Seat Ibiza Cupra ones as they will last a lot longer and the labour bill would have been roughly the same (maybe a bit more for getting the both sides changed but no where near double).
