vrs v superb v6 tdi

Featured Replies

Ok think im going mad, or just starting to feel my age!!! but im thinking about getting a v6 superb!

Was in one last night and i was really impressed, lots more toys then the vrs (mk1) even has little blue lights that light the interior door handles up!

Plus a decent computer display between the rev/speedo something that i feel the vrs should of had, in fairness the superb is newer then my vrs but still.

Also seemed to drive well with shed loads of torque which i like, what with the cost of petrol and that im quite tempted with 160bhp and 258 lb-ft is not that slow, just think what a remap could do! Plus i think they are rwd.. so somebody help me! talk me out of it!

Front wheel drive i'm afraid, with a massive heavy engine hanging infront of the front wheels, Superbs dont handle, the chassis can just about cope with the 130bhp pd engine but it's otherwise hopeless if your looking for fun.

If your after a refined cruiser it's not great either, too noisy and not comfortable enough!

Wait for the new vRS Superb :)

I've only driven a 130 but my thoughts:

It was a high spec car... full leather, all round heated seats, sat nav etc... auto :( .... very smooth, very comfortable. I drove 460 miles each way (over two days) and every time I stopped I got out feeling fine. The 130 is not exactly exciting in the superb (and it wasn't my car), so I didn't bother trying much sprinted driving but it was powerful enough for the job. I can imagine the V6 pulling nicely. I agree, they don't handle fantastically, they feel heavy and turning them is like turning a cruse liner - but I didn't expect anything else of a car like that so I wasn't disappointed. I'm not old enough to own a Superb yet ( :P ) but if I was, I would certainly consider one. I can imagine the V6 being quite good as most of my complaints of the 130 are down to a lack of power. It goes against everything I stand for... but I think I would get an auto if I was going down that route.

Hmmm I kinda disgree a little on this.

I agree that the superb isn't as nimble as the vrs and is a bit of a barge but is very comfortable. I actualy think the 130bhp version is quite strong considering the weight of the car. A friend of mine has bought a v6 auto and I would say the 130 manual is a tad quicker. The V6 is heavy and the auto fuel economy is pants.

As a back roads blaster it doesn't tick the boxes. However i'd rather take the superb on a real long distance run rather than the vrs. Shreds has the comfort version so no leather but very well specced all the same.

Look at Baker21's lowered example and it does look rather cool.

We have done a swap at the mo and I'm quite enjoying using the superb for work at the mo.

just my 2p

Cheers

I may be in my fifties but I'm not exactly ready for the proverbial pipe and slippers yet when it comes to cars! I am more with Alan and Phil on this though than Bob or John (although I do like John's avatar ).

My Superb is a company car, so I can't really tinker too much, or make it look like Baker21's (much as I'd love to), but it ticked all the right boxes for me when replacing my Octavia ....... great on toys, very comfortable, adequate grunt from the 130, and a good compromise on economy/company car tax/emmissions etc.

Sure, it's no sports car, and I think the V6 is very heavy, and thirsty for a diesel, but I LIKE my 130 very much, so I'm obviously not the one to talk you out of 'it'.

The 130pd manual is by far the pick of the engines, the V6 offers no real performance gain and a lot less economy, it performs well enough for what it is, but the interior engine/road noise is way too loud

Having had mine for 3 years, and sat in it for between 10/12 hours a night, 5 nights a week I found the driving position far from ideal, to get your legs and arms comfortably positioned you end up with the gearstick to far away than is comfortable, I'm just over 6 foot tall so not particularly lanky, but it seems it was built for stumpy legged drivers, while the passengers can stretch out!!

If your looking for a dull but roomy car and your not bothered about boot space (big boot, but awkward shape), performance, or handling then it'll do, but there are much better cars out there that tick those boxes, coming from a VRs i'd expect you to be a bit of a petrol head (even if only slightly) and I think you'd be hugely dissapointed.

I used to have a MK1 vrs Octy and moved to a Superb and love it to bits, 130 pd tdi is the better engine more MPG 38 around town and up to 50 on a long run, the engine is not bad and will chip to 170 bhp very easily....

 get one built after 05 as the seats fold down this makes getting stuff in the boot so much easier.....and the handling .....first put decent tyres on, if you can afford it michelin pilot sports and it will handle...it does lean a bit on corners but once you get used to that and push it to the limit the whole car will slide, not the back or the front the whole car :D which in my mind means it is pretty much balanced ........fantastic for long trips.....if you drive down the Motorway the road goes past you....really relaxing.

Yes it is big..... and yes it is fun.....and yes it needs a WHOLE parking space

Thanks for the replys, im not going to rush and and get one may have a drive of one first and compare it to the rs. I love the look of the vrs though and ive not had it long just not as happy with it as i thought i was going to be! If i keep it i will get it remapped though!

In some ways I agree and also disagree with some of the above. I run a heavily modded vRS and you know how cars tend to settle at a comfortable cruising speed (i.e not too noisey and without need for continous adjustment of steering/throttle), well my vRS is best at about 65moh on a motorway. My Superb however is happy either side of 100. My physical proportions make for a easy driving position and it has lots of design bits to make it a bit more than a box on wheels (for the price paid secondhand).

As for spirited driving, of course it won't match a modified vRS (I can't comment on a standard vRS because I've forgotten a long time a go what this would have felt like), but the brakes are strong, the performance sufficient and as for handling, you have to drive it differently to a smaller car. Applying a Superb to a corner in a spirited manner is all about smooth driving and improves you roadcraft no end. Aim for a constant entry and exit speed and you target is to set the car up nicely for the apex without having to wind in or out additional steering input. Drive it in this way and it is highly satisfying to get the barge quickly through the twisties.

Of course I have the best of both worlds here in that I can swap between both. vRS for track days and fun, Superb for daily communiting whether its in traffic or on the motorway. Truth is, you'll rarely find any single car that will tick all of the boxes.

You'll never get a definitive answer on this one as it's down to personal preference and what your own actual needs are.

My current Octavia does over and above what I require of it and it should hopefully last for the next four years or so until I'm ready to change it. Yes, there is a fair bit of wind noise at speed, not a massive amount of sound deadening on the front bulkhead and 90bhp isn't quite enough when it's fully loaded, but when balanced against the 55+mpg and easy drive it gives me, I'm more than happy.

Bear in mind that my last car was a 2.9 V6 Granada auto which was quick, handled well for its size, had tons of interior space and was like driving your favourite armchair. It also gave me over three years of completely faultless service in which I covered over 50,000 miles.

I'll admit that I do miss the performance and overall comfort of the Granada , but find that most of the time I can drive the Skoda pretty much the same and not notice a great deal of difference.

At the end of the day, if you like the Superb and feel you're ready for a change then go for it! It's not like you're buying a CityRover or something else that's fundamentally rubbish to start with is it?
