how to tell difference between real tuning box and resistor

Featured Replies

Hey all,

had the Octy a little while now and feel it could do with more oomph!

Ive been looking at buying a tuning box from Ebay, but there seems to be many types at many prices, how can you tell which ones are proper, and which are rubbish resistors!

The digital ones have a separate power supply to the battery.

They are also a lot more sophisticated as they have jumper plugs at one end.

I am referring to the Dragon boxes more specifically.

Also the place in which they connect. Resistors normally go on the fuel temp sender a 2 pin plug but the better ones intercept the signal to the injectors and use a much larger and round multipin plug.

Simple Resistor Boxes sell for as low as £10 BUT as high as £100, also some Resistor Boxes are sold as a Right Angle plug/socket Unit while others are sold with longer leads connecting the Resistor Box to the 2, separate, plugs.

So as advised above look for a Large Round Connectors, which plug into the side of the Engine, and 2 separate flying leads to power the box.

Dragon often advertise on Ebay, if you do not find one advertised under Skoda search under VW or Audi as they all have the same PD140, the Ebay units are cheaper than going through Dragons Web site and though they are often sold as Refurbished, they are normally brand new units, but in any case they still come with a 30 day return warrentee.

I think the ebay ones are mostly the result of Dragon's 'money back guarantee' that they offer - if you no likey, you send it back for a refund.

Buy one, return it and wait for it to appear on ebay at a much cheaper price

Only joking - DON'T!

No. It has the smaller 2 pin connectors.

Here ya go.......

CLICKY

That is the link to the Dragon ebay store where they sell the returns / reconditioned units. They still come with the 30 day money back and full 3 year warranty and are usually around the £200 mark rather than £300-odd.

Most were between £200 & £250 when i got mine but the one i actually got was priced at £195 so it might be worth waiting till the right one comes along at the right price.

The one i got was actually shown as for the Audi 1.9PD so look under Skoda, Audi, Seat & VW for the cheapest one for your engine type then just tell them what car it's actually for.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Dave.
