Does anyone know any codes of good practice voluntary or otherwise that I can quote to get my insurance company to act professionally ? Hell if i was as good as my job as they seem to be i'm sure i'd be sacked. . . .

You can always write to their complaints department and if you don't receive a satisfactory response, go to the insurance ombudsman. Not sure if you'll get any joy, but it might make you feel better
