New ARB on front needed-upgrade one or both?

Featured Replies

Righto, my front anti-roll bar on my Mk1 Octy vrs has got the dreaded corrosion problems so a new one and associated bushes are needed asap. Now, I`m not sure which way to go here, should I put a standard one on the front, as I`m led to believe that if you put a larger diameter bar(R32/S3)on the front it will tend towards more understeer if I don`t upgrade the rear at the same time? Or should I bite the bullet and go for a full Eibach kit or similar to upgrade both the front and the back in one shot?

Thanx in advance:)

why are you fitting a new rollbar? is it due to bushes knocking? if so i have just replaced mine with audi tt bush 1j0411314R at a cost of £9 pr. the plastic insert had worn through and moved leaving a 19mm bar in a bush of 22mm. skoda quoted for bar n bushes and labour to drop engine frame to fit.i removed what was left of insert fitted new bushes and its silent now. took about a hour to do.been great since.

Yeah, the bush is knocking because the bar has started corroding moving the plastic insert on the drivers side, so this sounds very much like yours. This sounds too good to be true, but if this works, it will save me a fortune! So, your saying the Audi TT bush will take up the slack as it were?

It will do for a small amount of time but you will need to get the ARB done as well for it to stop the noise.

I just had the bushes done and it was good for about 2 weeks but now the knocking is back so ill getting it done with the bushes again so that it leaves me in peace

I paid £144 at skoda for new OEM Bushes & Bar, Fiited.

Just for reference.

bushes actually cost me £9.09 for the pair, ensure the suffix on the part number is R as this is 19mm hole-same as roll bar. the TT has no plastic on the roll bar in the first place, the bushes go straight on to the 19mm bar. the vrs bush has a larger hole to alloow for plastic insert. Mine is silent now and has been for a bit and is as per audi TT- suck it and see for £9!

thanks, john

Thanks for all the advice, think I will take a gamble for £9.09 and see how long it lasts, should be a while really as you say it was designed for a bar without the silly plastic inserts.

Finally fitted the TT bushes today(Sat) problem solved, no more knocking, silent again! Don`t see why this would only last a few weeks, as they grip the bar so tightly now. Many thanks jskelton555, you have saved me a lot of money. The money I saved went on a Whiteline adjustable rear ARB, which is fantastic, as I fitted this at the same time too, my car is now totally transformed, stunning difference:thumbup:

I have to say I fitted the 19mm bushes in August and due to corrosion the bar started squeaking badly in less than 4 months. Ordered a new bar and droplinks from skoda and 19mm superpro polybushes for audi TT and all is well again. New bars don't have the plastic collar and have a metal sleeve for the bushes to fit snugly against so I don't envisage any future problems

Interesting, I`ve packed some grease on the bushes before I replaced them, but if they start getting noisy again it looks like I`ll have to get a new Skoda ARB with the metal sleeve and some superpro bushes also then.
