Help me please!!

My X-reg Skoda Octavia 1.8T elegance is dead!! My engine is deader than a norwegian blue parrot!! Diagnosis: (this is the technical stuff that the garage told me that i don't understand!!) Botttom of the engine is rattling, its smoking hard, there is probable ring damage, there is probable internal damage, and a strip down is not financially viable!!

They quoted me close to £3000, and this is just madness, and a lot of money that i can not afford. So i am now car less, and i would appreciate any advice on how to get rid of this vehicle and make a little bit of money back on it, if possible!!

Anyone any genuine ideas, that don't include burning it and claiming the insurance!!

The VAG 1.8T is a fairly common engine, so I don't know if the £3000 you were quoted is for a rebuild of your knackered one, or for a recon one from a rear-ended breaker? Water pumps aside, the 1.8T lump is fairly robust, so you might not even need a recon one if you can find a breaker without too many miles on it...?

First off - Really sorry to hear your troubles. Is the diag from a Skoda Dealer? Sounds like a serious failure in the bottom end, but how have they come to the diag? What happened - were you driving at the time of the failure, and if so what happened?

I would certainly get a second optinion as the car is out of warranty from an independent garage, and also look at the cost of a reconditioned engine and fitting as this will almost certainly be a cheaper option. Most importantly stay positive - it will cost money, but otherwise if the car is sound otherwise, it will be worth some sort of repair to get it going again. What is the car worth?

thanks but i think i wanna sell it for parts, preferably as a job lot so someone can come and take it away, was just seeing if anyone on here wanted one for parts or to do it up or repair it as a hobby maybe, much as i loved driving it, i can't afford anything on it as i had to buy another car!! but it has to be worth something to someone....Surely!!

I paid 3k for a new exchange engine direct from Skoda. A rebuild at £3k? Sod that I'll take a new one please

Reconditioned Engines

They will do a rebuilt engine and take yours in exchange so they can re manufacture that.

I had a recon engine in a fiesta and everything else failed before the engine gave any issues :)

The engine comes with a 5year/60k mile warranty too.

You could get a recon engine and have it fitted for less than 3k

The engine IIRC isn't that hard to work on. Something I would ask is:

- Is it losing any oil.

- What colour is the smoke

- Is the car actually driveable.

Not wanting to accuse your garrage, but I have heard garages say things like that before, offer to give you £500 for your old car off a new one then fix it up knowing it is cheap and sell it on for a lot more.

Moved to the correct forum.

Please note that if you do wish to offer the car for sale here you will need to become a Freedom member to do so.
