I know there are many threads concerning tyre size for the Octy VRs, but has anybody got any information on how the insurance companies view the change and the cost implications for fitting 225/45/17 tyres.

That would depend on your personal insurance record and the company you are insured with. I'd suspect that a fair few insurance companies wouldn't insure you if you have non-standard sized wheels and/or tyres fitted. The best thing would be to call them up and ask them first.

Far better to ring up and ask than to have an accident and your insurer use it as an excuse not to cover you... :(

i dont think insurance care what tyres you have! as long as they're road legal!

tyres are a consumable and they dont increase power or desirability. they cant expect you to use the original conti's for the life of the car can they....

No , but the OP is talking about fitting a slightly different size set of tyres which could possibly be seen as a modification that should be declared

I have seen a few late VRs's on Skoda dealer forecourts with 225 tyres but are being sold as non-modified cars. Did some of the later cars come with 225's as standard, as the size of the VRs's tyres are not recorded anywhere in my handbook
