Engine won't start in damp weather

Featured Replies

Hi. I got felicia N reg 1.3, evry time when it's raining and damp i can't start the engine, starter is turning but it don't want to start. It only starts if somebody will tow me. Please can anybody help!

WD40 is your friend here. Seems some water may be getting in somewhere.

Check all spark plug connections and connections on the distributor cap. Remove the distributor cap by undoing the 2 prongs either side, use a cloth to clean/dry out inside the cap and spray WD40 inside it. Replace the cap with the 2 clips, spray WD40 on top of the distributor cap (avoid spraying it all over the auxilliary drive belt) and spray it all around the connections with the spark plugs.

If it keeps on happening it may be worthwhile replacing the distributor cap and all leads, or try some silicone oil sprayed around the spark plugs and on top of the distributor cap. Again avoid drive belt.

Hope this works.

I'll try to do that and hopefuly it will work if not maybe i should change the spark plugs?

If it doesn't work could be worth checking the leads, distributor cap and rotor arm are in good condition first. Give the leads a clean up, but don't stress them or bend too much. Check for any cracks/splits etc. You have to get the leads off to get to the plugs anyway. Just be sure not to make the mistake of forgetting where they all plug into. :)

A good check for the leads is to look at the in the dark to see if they are damaged. You will be able to see if they are damaged by the blue crack lines in them - I have done this on a couple of cars. Best solution is then to change the leads as soon as possible.

Clean the HT leads and dissie cap using old rags (you won't want them again after this).

If that doesn't work, replace the leads and spark plugs. Back when I had petrol engined cars I used to replace the plugs every year, irrespective of what the book life was, and my car always ran better afterwards.

If none of this works, call back, but we're at the point where things might start getting expensive.

I always found with the 1.3 that it was worth changing the plugs, leads, distributor, and rotor arm every 10K so that it runs nicely - used to make a heck of difference. People quote that the stuff lasts for longer, but it seems to make a big difference when its done.

On my 1.6 I change the plugs every 10K as it makes a big difference, and leads, rotor arm, distributor cap every 20K or so (slightly bigger and more heavy duty) - even though it says in haynes much longer!
