Bit of a stupid question...

But how do I know if my Fabia has xenons or not??

Lights seem very good, and when I turn them on they start off blue then change to bright white.

Could this just be the bulbs??

Yeah, sounds right. You will have projector style units and headlamp washers fitted.

Xenon's usually flicker when you first switch them on... The two major clues I can think of are, you'll have headlamp washers in the bumper and near your headlamp controls there wont be a height adjustment as the xenons are self levelling.

Ah.

I have projector style units but not headlamp washers - just blanks in the holes.

Probably bulbs then.

But then I don't have headlight adjustment.

Hmm...

The blanks are probably the washers as I think they pop out. If its the same as the Octy if you turn your lights on then use the washers on your windscreen your headlight ones should pop out on the first and then every 5th spray.

Right, I'm off outside to try..

The headlamp washers are hidden in the bumper and pop up every now and then when you have your dipped beam on and you use the windscreen wash.

If you have no adjustment then they are Xenons :)

Are the lights instantly as bright as they go when you turn them on (halogen bulbs) or do they get brighter after a second or two when they have warmed up (xenon)?

Xenon lights will go through the auto level cycle :)

It would seem I do have xenons!!!

Unexpected bonus.

Splendid, I'm a happy bunny!!

Nice one :)

They are great :)

I didn't know that bit about "every 5th spray" - that's the trouble with headlight washers, unless you are stationary behind something like a bus, you have no idea what they do! It was only after Lummox answered a thread about this and said that they are pumped up with water pressure, spray for a short fixed period, then drop down, that I understood how they worked!

In a further display of ignorance, I ask this.

Do the xenon bulbs die and need replacing or will they survive ?

They should survive the lifetime of the car. I can only ever remember seeing two vehicles with one xenon out so it is pretty rare.

Cheers

Dave.

But the 'lifetime' of the car is only around 6 to 7 years IIRC

Put it this way i know of quite a few Polo GTi owners who have 1999/2000 cars and are still using the original bulbs. My GTi was 5 years old when i sold it and the bulbs still worked ok in that too.

7 years = 84k, so providing they do 60k Skoda couldn't give a monkeys as there is no warranty left!

Hmm...

that explains it, i knew i had xenons, but wondered why no light washers! i too thought they were blanks!

Another Q about lights, I've got fogs... but after nearly two months of motoring still haven't figured out how to turn them on. Can anyone shed some light?

pull the headlight switch out one click for front two for rear..

  • 1 month later...

Certainly for VW customers, gas discharge bulbs have a lifetime warranty, regardless of mileage/age.

Is that something quite new then???? When i had the Polo just under a couple of years ago i asked how much the bulbs were if ever one went and was told i'd be looking at a bill of around £110.

Cheers

Dave.
