Ignition switch

Featured Replies

A quick question how long do you think my ignition switch will last? It played up one Saturday a few weeks ago - and then has been fine until today. Out of 6 starts, its failed twice - both times I turned the key - nothing happened, and then turned it again and it worked!

I am just wondering if I will get away with not fixing this until end of March time when I want to get rid of it, or should I get it replaced ASAP? I want to hang on ideally as cash is tight!

A possible bodge repair.

If you can get at the wires behind the ignition switch, you could wire up a switch to connect the starter wire to whatever wire it goes to - then you would put the key in, turn to on position, then press the button to start and let go.

As this seems to be a common problem hopefully someone more informed will know more about it. I understand there was some sort of bodge of the ignition barrel itself posted here at some point.

It happened to me a few times during summer, but not once the last two-three months (touch wood).

Maybe not related at all, but the problem disappeared after I've cleaned my key - there was a bit of dirt in the "ridges".

Of course it could get worse and worse, but if not you can probably leave it till March (maybe park on the top of a hill till then :D

Thanks for the feedback guys. The Start button might be an option if things continue the way they are!

I have just cleaned the key - there was quite a bit of muck in it - and I hadn't realised. I will keep you posted on how it works,
