Anyone know about number plates?

Featured Replies

I have a number plate on my car which reads R*** OAD, and was talking to the garage a few weeks ago about it being worth something. I went on a couple of websites and requested a valuation - and it turns out its worth about £200

The question is do I sell it and reap the benefits now - or is it worth hanging on to? I know nothing about number plates, and people I have asked so far aren't sure. I'm looking to change the car in the spring - and I have heard it is possible to get the plates off the car, and then get a new registration for it. Does anyone know about this?

Im also having a look around a couple of websites to see if others beat that original price.

I would be very grateful for any advice :)

might be worth doing before you get rid of it , why give the possible benefit to anybody else

Yes I'm definitley going to sort something out before getting rid of the car, cheers

You'll need to sell it through a dealer really, or eBay (although I can imagine you'll encounter a fair few timewasters).

My Dad sold one through Personalised number plates, dvla number plates info. Private number plates last year. I think Number Plates and Private Plates. will also sell on your behalf. They take a % but could be a way forward.

Saying it's worth something is entirely different to someone actually buying it though :)

I'd start by contacting one/both of those companies, personally.

Dont forget, it will cost you £125 to have the plate put on retention and pay the transfer fee (more likely to sell if transfer fee has been paid which accounts for about £25 of that total).

So unless you've got a plate worth a decent amount of wedge, it's probably not worth the effort.

Also I'm assuming it's on your Felicia and is the cars original reg, in which case they will want to inspect the car before granting the request (they inspect all plate retention requests on vehicles over a certain age), and this can take a number of months, depending how busy they are, and when the inspector is in your area.

Cheers for the advice. I didn't know how much was involved with all of this - so thank you for the advice. I didn't know what you had to do, or how much it costed to get it off my current car.

Thinking about it going forward - is it worth just keeping the reg no, and putting it on my next car? Would it go up in value over years if it was worth a little bit at the moment?

Thanks

To be honest, I'd doubt it's really worth anything, unless the 3 missing numbers make read differently?
