Windscreen replaced, now rattle

Featured Replies

Hi,

I had the windscreen replaced on my Octavia last September (due to a stone hitting it whilst on the motorway).

I drove the car before the fitters arrived, and all was fine (except for the screen). I then drove the car a few hours after they had gone and found that whenever I drove on "rumbly" roads the windscreen seemed to rattle from the bottom middle of the screen. Pressing with a finger onto the inside of the screen stopped the rattle.

RAC Auto windscreens came out and re-fitted the screen. This didn't change anything.

They came out again and re-fitted the screen once more (with extra blocks under the screen), this made it so that the rattle only occured then I went faster.

After further investigations, involving remove the scuttle, a different screen was put in. This seemed to cure the problem.

However, in the last month or so, it's come back - Not as badly as before though. It now only happens *some days*... Not quite sure why some days rather than others. Might be when it's colder, not sure. Again though, pressing on the windscreen lightly from the inside stops it (as does putting the windscreen wipers on).

The RAC are (probably quite rightly) getting fed up with this now. I ended up demoing the rattle to the area manager the other day and unfortunately, it was on a day that the car decided it wasn't going to rattle for me.

Has anyone got any suggestions as to what could be causing this, or what I should do next?

Many thanks,

Adam.

Were they all the same type of screen?

I'm having mine replaced, any idea if its standard practice for the surrounding rubber to also be changed?

They probably bond the glass with an adhesive that's not strong enough to support the windshield's weight, which makes it slide downwards a bit.

In time this will wear down the glue, and you will start to get water (/vapours) inside the car. Pushing against it from either side seems to cure the problem because it keeps the adhesive stretched, but this will also fail with time as it ages.

Have it re-replaced at a Skoda dealer using the VAG servicing procedure and you should be fine.

I thought Skoda Dealers contract windscreen jobs out to Windscreen agents?

My money would be on the ticket holder. Both my vRS were boken on delivery and it makes the most awful noise which initially sounds as though it's coming from the dashboard. Wedge a bit of paper behind it and see if it helps. It is partially bonded in with the screen so it will have been disturbed.

If it isn't that then there is a service bulletin which covers the demister vents in the dashboard. They can be replaced under WTY.

Totally agree about it being the ticket holder.

On my Octy II it isn't bonded, but is screwed to the A pillar.

Just carefully take the drivers side A pillar off and then remove or replace the plastic piece.

It is screwed but there is also a small tab on it which locates behind the windscreen frame and thus is in the bonding agent.

Something like 97p for a new one.

Ahhh, didn't notice that tbh :$

I don't think I actually have a ticket holder.... What does it look like?

If I don't have one, then I doubt that's the problem.

Adam.

It's a clear plastic tab on the driver's side A pillar, about 5 inches above the dash.

Look above the left vent, on the windshield, in the image below.
