Under-sealing car?

Featured Replies

Heard a reference to this on a 'how to make my car last as long as poss' type

thread somewhere. I live in a part of the country where roads are particularly

dirty. What does this proceedure entail, what sort of cost is involved and

is it recommended by those (you lot) in the know..:)

I got mine Waxoiled, you can DIY as it can be purchased in Halfrauds, but it is is easier if done with a compressed air applicator and up on ramps. Luckily my son works in a garage.

I got a tin of Hammerite Underbody Seal 2.5L from Halfords Price £9.99 doesn't cost too much at Halfords. So far I've only had time to do the arches and the front undershield. You can put it on with a brush.

I think my 94 one had never been undersealed appart from the factory at new. Looks like it had some sort of plastic type coating applied? Anyway there is a few rust patches I am hoping to deal with. Want to do the rest of under the car when I have time.

One thing I'm not 100% sure of is if the stuff can be used on bits like the torsion beam, front wishbones, exhaust and fuel tank mounts, fuel pipes, rear brake back plates (and there's probably a few other potential areas for application I'm not 100% certain of).

I'm not sure I rate Waxoil having done a fiesta with is and finding that it can cause some problems.

For a not too expensive amount we had something called PAVA applied to an old car and this was supposed to be topped up. We never had it topped up but never had any rust in 18 years.

Great stuff.

Personally I would probably not bother in warranty and just make sure you clean the underside with a pressure washer etc. I'd get the stuff inspected at any services and have the dealer fix any damage as soon as it's seen

The paint on stuff is ok, but doesn't last that long either.

Aren't the underside panels galvanised?, I have yet to see a rusty Fabia.

As fordfan has said, I believe the underside of the octy1,2 and fabia1,2 to be galvanised. You wont gain anything by undersealing because it wont rust at all anyway. In the 5 years my mk1 octy was in our family possesion, there was no sign of rust at all.

Galvanised Steel wont rust, however if you get a stone that manages to chip through the zinc layer and into the steel itself then you can eventually get rust.

This is why the under body sealant is there. To stop impact damage and protect the seam areas such as the sills.

There is no point adding an extra layer, but there is point in making sure this doesn't get damaged and where it does topping it back up.

If you want to keep the car for 20 years without rust it is worth regularly checking the under body and this should, IIRC, be part of the inspection services.

 That just about clears it up for me, nice one...

As has been said, unless you are keeping it for years dont bother. As an aside I know a garage who work on a lot of old 4x4's & Imported Jap 4x4's which have less underbody protection. They still use the old DIY trick of spraying the underside with old Engine oil, it really gets into all the knoocks & crannies, this was done long before underseal systems came onto the market. The danger with any kind of sealant is you can seal the corrosion in but you wont stop it continuing to eat into the car
