Mot

Featured Replies

With modern cars being far better built and more robust isn't it about time that the MOT was only due after five years rather than the current three

Although they still wear at the same rate. 3 years is too long imho and they should be annual irrespective of car age....

Plenty of cars fail a first or second MOT. I imagine its the only time a load of people have their bulbs checked. There's been talk of making the test bi-annual and I wouldn't have agreed with that either.

3 years is fine.

Cars still need checking and maintaining regardless the age.

our 1s't 1 is 4 years. :D

then every year after that. :(

in a govt computerised establishment...

means theres no bangers on the roads here...

Yep - mine just did.

Rear number plate may be mis read and more seriously 30% imbalance in front brakes and it wasn't pulling, so I wouldn't have known that otherwise - not due for a service for another 7 - 8k miles.

Perhaps a better idea would be a graduated test ie check less things after 1 year, more things as the car gets older.

just mho

There was some suggestion that it was going to be every 2 years rather than annual - was debating this with someone awhile ago and agreed it should be annual with a one off rebuild recert at 10 years.

aye SWMBO's failed with a loose CV gater and emissions. Was fixed and put back through with out paying a retest.

I think MOT costs should be cut in half but we should have them every 6 months. With services getting longer and longer the majority of people never check tyre wear/brake wear etc etc. It may have been indicated that tyres are worn at a service but the garage can never know how long the tyres will last. It might also help with all these pople who have a minor bump and replace a headlight themselves but never get it aligned properly, I'm fed up of being dazzled by headlights that are set incorrectly.

That must be why so many cars have their front foglights on with just the sidelights - the dipped beam bulbs are goosed...

It's indeed true that cars themselves are getting more reliable but most of them also do more miles than they used to a decade or three ago. Time was that 20,000 miles a year was seriously heavy usage - now lots of my friends do that without batting an eyelid. At only about 10,000 miles a year myself I'm in the light user category, but I still find things to fix on my (usually meticulously maintained) motor.

I also think 3 years is right for the first test and annual tests after that. It's pretty clear that with some cars that's the only check they get.

ALSO

I would like to see driving tests repeated every 5 years, and if you fail a test you get demoted to L plate status until you pass a retest.
