but the book says 95
Owners Manual p119:

Petrol engines

Unleaded petrol conforming to DIN EN

I questioned this with the dealer when I brought mine. The car IS designed for 98 Ron, but 95 is fine, just a slight drop in 'performance'. Been running mine on 95 Ron since day 1 and 14k later its fine.

Denis,

I read that quote as specifying 95RON for the VRS,its ambiguous at best

Elculo, I agree it could be put more clearly.

how wierd I was going to ask the exact same thing

mine runs ok on plain old unleaded...but should I see a small boost in performance using 98 ron fuel ( i am sure my fuel filler says 95/98)

and is shell optimax a higher octane or just slightly treated with stuff?

Mine has been run on Optimax since day one and have no complaints...... The Jabba guys said this is the way to go and my remap was actually tweaked for Optimax! Apparently MPG is better too........ :)

The only difference between 98 and 95 RON (Research Octane Number) is that 98 RON is less likely to pre-ignite under higher cylinder pressures, for example if you turn the boost pressure up on the turbo so you run a higher boost the old 95 RON would explode before the spark plug could ignite it which is bad for the engine, the 98 RON is more likely to explode when the spark plug ignites it and not before. Saying all that though unless you run a stupid amount of boost 95 RON is OK.

Fact : Leaded petrol back in the 80's had a RON value of 99.. bloody rocket fuel ;)

Ivan

The 1.4 16v (100bhp) engine also recommends 98RON over 95.

It's all to do with High Compression engines.
