Sky for noobs!!

Featured Replies

I have a Sky+ feed coming into my house and I am curious about the whole sky thing as I have never had it before. I only want the free to air channels as I cannot justify all the other rhubarb. With regards to the two cables that come with sky+ can i use a normal bog standard sky digi box? If so do both of these need plugging in or is it just one? Anyone got a cheap sky box for sale? :D

Cheers

I think that if you dont subscribe to one of the sky packages

Rupert murdoc turns off the Sky+ features so you end up with a normal box

Hi i have Vigin V+ so not a big expert on sky + but i would of thougt the cable would be the same for both Sky and Sky+ the only diff would box your Sky box.

As the signal coming in from the dish would be the same its only the box that would be diff

if you know what i mean

A normal Sky box has a single co-ax cable from the dish.

A Sky+/SkyHD box has 2 co-ax cables from the dish so the box can record from one feed while you watch live TV on the other feed.

screw one of the co-ax cables into the back of a boggo Sky box and you are away, you need a small adjustable spanner to unscrew the F-sat connector on the back of the box.

Buy a PVR if you want to record stuff from freeview/freesat.

See told you i did not no anything about sky:O

If you get a boggo standard sky box, then you can connect that to any one of the feeds and get the free to air channels. However to get C4 and Five and a few others you will need to get a freesatfromsky card. They charge a one off fee for the card which will give you about 200 channels for nothing. However, some of the channels that are available for free on terrestrial freeview are not available for free on sky, a typical example being E4.

So yes, you can buy a box off ebay and it will work, as long as the dish is still correctly alligned and the LNB has not been removed.
