Gearbox woes

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I have a problem with my gearbox...I think it's a lack of gearbox oil. I'd like to try to change this myself, but not having a Felicia before, I'm not too sure where to start!

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Cheers.

the shifting varies between feeling like it's in thick syrup and having no lube in there whatsoever!

Is it as easy as draining the gearbox oil from below and refilling it from above (guess it would be difficult to do it the other way round!)? Where are the points on the car to do this?

Cheers!

I should be able to tell you tomorrow as mines on the ramps waiting for me to get the parts from the local dealer.

You fill through the hole vacated by the speedo drive, and also measure level against the speedo drive. It's location can be identified by looking for the cable running from the instrument panel to the top end of the transmission. There's a bolt (9mm I think) to undo and withdraw with a washer, then slide the metal piece you removed the bolt from out, you can then remove the speedo drive.

There should be a bolt underneath where gear oil is drained.

Oh my instructions are based on 1.3. If the 1.6 and 1.9d both have the speedo cable driven I assume they'll be quite similar.

Are you sure the stiffnass is the gearbox ? and not just the lincage siezing up under the car at the base of the lever. I have had this before

Easy fix if you can get the shanked bolt out, once out drill it out to 10mm and fit another bolt with plenty of copper grease

Probably best to replace the nylon bushes too whilst in there, so if you're getting the nylon bushes which cost next to nothing probably worth ordering the correct bolt too. When I ordered it it was something like £2/3 so bit pricey for a bolt and was special order so took a few days, but saves the hassle of drilling.

I think access to the top of the gearbox - for filling is the same on the 1.6 - not 100% sure with the 1.9 diesel engine. I would imagine they all use a similar design.
