Cracked Windscreen ?

Featured Replies

:thumbdwn: Just found a crack in the bottom of the windsceen on the drivers side creaping up, has the cold weather caused it ?. I have already had one changed about 18 mths ago with a crack in the same place, is it a common fault with the mk1 Octavia ?

When i went to look at the one i bought it had a crack at the bottom of the screen, dealer changed windscreen but never really thought about how it broke.Body is quite stiff if i jack mine up at the front jacking point the rear wheel lifts off the ground as well.

I had a similar crack that ran down from the top, it was caused by a stone hitting only a couple of mm from the top edge of windscreen which only left a tiny chip but the crack ended up about 8 inches long. The top edge doesn't have anything covering it though, unlike the bottom.

When I had my Octy this happened to me I left it over night when everything was fine and it was in the summer so not cold and when I came out in the morning my windscreen was cracked. Same place as yours near side bottom of the front screen.

It might be worth doing a search as I believe that it maybe something that Skoda are aware of and may help you with the costs.

Beleive it or not mine is cracked too !!

Although i had put it down to a chip that had maybe grown.

:thumbdwn: Went to my mates the other day and he used to work for a Ford dealer and he said that there used to be a problem with Mondeo's flexing the body and cracking the windscreen ! so is the same happening with Ocys with all these speed bumps nowadays or is it when you jack the car up with just one wheel ? anybody else had similar problems ?

:( The Wifes Fabia has developed a crack in the same place (offside bottom edge) it HAS to be the speed bumps flexing the body and stressing the screen ! and just looking with a search on the forums it looks as though other people are having the very same problems ! I will have to ask the windsceen replacement bloke. :thumbdwn:

Don't talk to me about Windscreens, I had 2 in seven months -

02 September 2007: The first windscreen was a replacement for the original screen that came with the car. I was changing the wiperblades and the wiperblade arm was at 90 degress without a blade attached. A gust of wind caught the arm and cracked the windscreen at near-side bottom corner, Autoglass replaced the screen £75.00 excess. This was obviously my fault.

09 March 2008 - I drove the car on Saturday 08 March and didn't notice anything suspect. I went to take car out on Sunday morning and a crack had appeared on near-side bottom corner. Autoglass came out this Saturday to replace it. The Autoglass Fitter said that there was an impact point at the bottom of the screen but there was no external damage e.g. a stone impact point. He said that he couldn't understand how it happened but I would still have to pay £75 excess because it was not a typical vertical stress crack. I am not happy at about this and definitely would have noticed if something had hit my windscreen while driving.

This sounds like it is a common problem with the Octavia MkI. If this happens again, I will be selling the 20VT.

Before my Octy I ran a Fiat Punto for 8 years and I can not remember a stone hitting the windscreen. I've had the Skoda for 4 years now and something seems to hit the windscreen on almost every long Motorway trip. As a consequence the screen has at least 5 little chips in it, and one small crack. Luckily this is outside the swept area so not an MOT Issue. It must be a peculiarity with the aerodynamics.

funny enough i'm off to get my screen changed at autoglass this morning, it's got a large crack starting from the bottom of the screen going up behind the tax disc holder.

the crack hasn't grown in the last 6 months it's been there, and my daily journey involves loads of speed bumps every day! the crack has a definate small impact point at it's start.

i've had quite a few impacts on the screen, one leading to a big chip, the others just little chips.

perhaps the standard of modern replacement screens isn't quite the same as OEM ?

I guess it's just one of those things.

Although i'd much rather be replacing screens, than big stone chips on the bodywork etc..

I had one split on me...curiously just after I had transported a boot full of slate floor tiles for 15 miles from the tile shop:O. The guy at the tile shop said it would be fine. In hindsight it was not. It had flexed the shell sufficiently to break the screen. Anyhow I had it replaced (£25.00 excess for me:thumbup:) and it has been fine for 2 years or more.

Its worth remembering that it is often "free" to get your stone chips mended on your insurance before they progress into a crack.

Just all be thankful your windscreen is now of the laminated variety rather than the toughned ones that "explode" when hit by a stone!

I'd be worried why your shell would flex that much with a boot load !!

Do you not have any suspension ? :D

I guess that you're not entirely familiar with the weight of slate flooring:rolleyes:. The steering capability was somewhat reduced. I certainly wouldn't recommend it. Suspension? Not anymore:D

:D

Not a good move then ! ;)

I remember putting some slabs in the back of my dads old Saab estate once...steering felt rather vague to say the least. :D

:thumbdwn: Had the Fabia screen replaced last week, and just found another crack on the nearside of the Octavia (2 now!) its got to be flexing of the body with all these speed bumps !
