boost clip "pop" probs - a solid solution

Featured Replies

Common problem with running remapped boost is the OEM clips not holding the pipework together. After having the OEM clip side on the hose to the Allard pipe let go, I noticed that the tabs were squished. Little search on here showed that replacing the hose and clips was not the best solution.

What I did was remove all the OEM pipework between the hose and the Forge FMIC pipework and take it to my local exhaust place. A piece of otherwise scrap Stainless steel cut-off was bent to match the tube (allowing 1.5-2.5 inches extra either end). I cleaned up the rough edges well with a dremel stone. Cut off the metal edges of the rubber hose attached to the Allard's pipe. Fitted together with a jubilee clip (only needed to get one).

result: solid leak-free pipework. Booted repeatedly to 2 bar without any probs...

As a (very) happy side-effect, I notice that the boostgauge I fitted is now showing smoother rises and falls of boost. The car is feeling substantially more powerful - it's apparent in retrospect that I had been having a small leak there for some time!

Now where's that R32 gone to?.......

Cheers :D

I recognise that foam. ;)

Hope the water bottle doesn't rattle on it during driving. Looks like a solid replacement, and a bit of bling too. ;)

Bit of rattle just on low rpm - was too tired to check it out - thanks for that comment Jase!

I actually have a buffing wheel and the green rouge to polish SS - but couldn't be bothered tbh!

bit of rubber will sort that water bottle proximity issue np...

Very nice - good idea

needs a little 'lip' rolled in the upper end as well as a better clip than I found. Still pops off the slick upper end of the tube....

Otherwise may just rough up the surface with sandpaper and find a better clip....

asked around - can't find a place to roll a securing lip onto the pipe.

For now cleaned off the SS tube and the inner part of the hose from the oil mist, and used two regular jubilee clips. That SS is really slippery and the OEM curve is slick rubber - a 90 degree silicone hose would be far better.....

Also should get around to doing a proper catch tank....

Will need to do some careful scuffing of the last 2 inches either end after I find a proper marine-grade solid wide jubilee clip at the local chandlers....

Then to scientifically test it by using WOT from low revs in 5th....

Have you tried an industrial air conditioning company? They might have the suitable kit to do it.

lol, I have such a place right next door to work - got some air compressor oil from them once - will ask!

Thanks

Ended up using epoxy and tape to form lips. Really easy to do - just place masking tape on the inner side and mix up epoxy, surround the tube covering the outer edge of the tape, where you want the lip to be. While still sticky yank off the tape to reveal a nice sharp-edged lip.

Running this since about 5 months ago and it's been perfect.

Great minds Bas ;) lol
